Chapter 1

The first white curl hit the stone steps before anyone said a word.

Then the scissors snapped again.

Sharp.

Cruel.

Close to the scalp.

The old woman sat frozen in her wheelchair on the front steps of the Whitmore mansion, dressed in a white lace dress she had saved for her son’s return.

Tears ran down her wrinkled cheeks.

Her hands curled helplessly in her lap.

Behind her, Serena leaned over the wheelchair in a tight black dress, one hand gripping a fistful of white hair, the other holding the scissors.

“Stay still, old woman,” Serena hissed.

Then she cut again.

More hair fell onto the woman’s shoulders.

Onto her lap.

Onto the polished stone beneath her feet.

At the top of the stairs, Damian Whitmore appeared in combat fatigues, still carrying the duffel bag he had brought home from deployment.

He stopped like his body had been struck.

His mother.

His mother was crying.

His fiancée was behind her with scissors in her hand.

For one second, Damian could not understand what he was seeing.

Then Serena bent close to his mother’s ear.

“He’ll never believe you,” she whispered.

Damian dropped the duffel bag.

It hit the stairs with a heavy thud.

“Mom?”

Serena’s body stiffened.

She turned so fast the scissors flashed in the sun.

The smile vanished from her face.

Damian ran down the steps.

His mother lifted her face toward him, trembling, her hair uneven and butchered, her eyes full of fear and hope at the same time.

Serena let go of the hair and stumbled back.

Then, in an instant, her expression changed.

The cruelty disappeared.

Fake panic replaced it.

“She attacked me, Damian!” Serena cried, holding the scissors away from herself like they were evidence of innocence. “I was only trying to help her!”

Damian dropped to one knee beside the wheelchair.

He placed one hand on his mother’s shoulder.

She flinched before realizing it was him.

That flinch broke something inside him.

He looked down.

White hair covered the stone.

There were bruises around his mother’s thin wrists.

A red mark stretched along the side of her neck where someone had pulled too hard.

His jaw tightened.

“Who did this?”

Serena sobbed dramatically.

“She’s been unstable all morning. She grabbed the scissors. I had to take them from her.”

Damian did not answer.

His eyes had moved to the ground near Serena’s feet.

Beside her sunglasses lay a smartphone.

The screen was still glowing.

A red icon blinked in the corner.

LIVE.

Damian reached down and picked it up.

Serena stopped crying.

Her face went empty.

Damian stared at the screen.

Comments were still flying past.

People had seen it.

All of it.

His voice dropped low.

“You streamed this?”

Serena’s lips parted.

No sound came out.

His mother began to shake harder.

Damian looked from the phone to Serena.

Then back to the screen.

The woman he was supposed to marry had not just hurt his mother.

May you like

She had broadcast it.

👉 But before Damian saw the livestream, Serena had spent months building a lie that almost made him doubt his own mother.
