Chapter 5

The police took Serena’s statement.

Then they took her away.

She was charged with assault, elder abuse, harassment, and later financial exploitation after the attorney discovered she had attempted to remove Damian’s mother from several care decisions.

The engagement ended before the police car left the driveway.

Damian removed the ring from Serena’s finger himself after she tried to keep it.

“That belongs to the Whitmore estate,” the attorney said.

Serena laughed bitterly.

“So now I’m the villain?”

Damian looked at his mother’s butchered hair.

“No,” he said. “You were the villain when you thought no one was watching.”

Serena’s reputation collapsed within hours.

The same audience she had performed for turned on her.

Sponsors dropped her.

Her accounts were suspended.

Clips of her saying, “He’ll never believe you,” played across local news.

Her own live video became the evidence she could not deny.

But justice did not make Damian’s mother instantly whole.

That evening, the mansion was quiet again.

Too quiet.

Damian sat beside his mother in her bedroom while a nurse gently cleaned the red marks on her wrist.

The old woman would not look in the mirror.

Her hair, once long and white and carefully brushed every night, hung in uneven patches around her face.

Damian held the broken strands Serena had cut in a small towel.

He did not know what to do with them.

His mother saw his face.

“Don’t look like that,” she said.

“Like what?”

“Like you’re the one who got hurt.”

He almost broke then.

“I should have come sooner.”

She reached for his hand.

“You came.”

“After.”

Her eyes softened.

“After is still better than never.”

Damian shook his head.

“That’s not enough.”

May you like

“No,” she said quietly. “But it is a beginning.”

👉 The next morning, Damian stopped making apologies and started giving his mother back the power Serena tried to steal.
