Chapter 1

PART 1:
Scott Collins threw the divorce papers onto the glass coffee table so hard the silver pen bounced off the edge.
“Sign it,” he said. “Pack your things. This house is mine now.”
The room went silent.
Avery Collins sat on the white sofa in a tailored cream suit, her hands folded in her lap, her face calm enough to make the insult feel even sharper.
Behind Scott, Kayla stood near the marble fireplace with one hand resting on her stomach.
She didn’t say a word.
She didn’t have to.
Her smile said everything.
The new woman.
The new baby.
The new life Scott thought he had purchased with seven million dollars.
Scott pointed at the papers again.
“I’m not asking twice.”
Avery looked down at the stack.
Divorce agreement.
Property release.
Spousal waiver.
A rushed, ugly little document written by a man who thought money could erase twelve years of marriage.
Then she lifted her eyes to him.
“You really think you won?”
Scott laughed.
It was the kind of laugh he used when he wanted someone to feel small.
“I inherited seven million dollars, Avery. What do you think?”
Kayla’s smile grew wider.
Avery picked up the pen.
For one second, Scott looked satisfied.
He leaned back like a king watching someone kneel.
Avery signed the first page.
Then the second.
Then the third.
Scott’s chest rose with victory.
Kayla let out a soft breath, almost like relief.
But Avery never looked broken.
Not once.
When she finished, she placed the pen down slowly.
Then she reached into the folder beside her and pulled out a different document.
Older paper.
Thicker.
Legal tabs along the side.
A highlighted paragraph near the bottom.
Scott’s smile faded.
“What is that?” he asked.
Avery looked at the highlighted line.
Then she smiled for the first time that morning.
A small, quiet smile.
“You never read the condition.”
Before Scott could answer, the front door opened.
Attorney Jerome Carter stepped into the living room in a black suit, carrying a leather briefcase and a sealed legal file.
He looked straight at Scott.
“Mr. Collins,” he said, “she signed exactly what we needed.”
Scott’s face went pale.
Kayla’s hand slipped from her stomach.
Avery leaned back, calm as still water.
“No drama,” she said.
But the truth had already entered the room.
May you like
And it had Scott by the throat.
👉 But to understand why Scott had just destroyed himself, you have to go back three months before he thought he was rich.
