Chapter 4

PART 4:

Carter did not rush her.

When she finally folded the letter, she asked, “What do we do?”

Carter’s answer was simple.

“We let Scott prove who he is.”

So Avery waited.

Every insult became evidence.

Every late-night transfer.

Every message.

Every threat.

When Scott told her, “You should be grateful I’m offering anything,” she recorded the date.

When Kayla posted a photo from inside the guesthouse with the caption new beginnings, Avery printed it.

When Scott moved ten thousand dollars from the trust-linked maintenance account to put a deposit on Kayla’s condo, Carter filed a notice.

Still, Scott believed he was untouchable.

Men like Scott usually do.

Then Kayla got pregnant.

Or at least, that was what she told Scott.

The day she showed him the test, Scott came home with champagne.

He didn’t even hide it.

Avery was standing in the kitchen when he walked in.

Kayla followed him, wearing Avery’s robe.

Eleanor’s robe.

Scott saw Avery looking at it and smirked.

“You can take your clothes when you leave,” he said. “But family things stay here.”

Avery looked at Kayla.

Kayla touched the sleeve like it was already hers.

“That color never really suited you anyway.”

Avery felt something inside her go very still.

That night, Scott told her he wanted a divorce.

Not gently.

Not with shame.

With excitement.

He had already prepared everything.

He had already chosen Avery’s humiliation as part of the celebration.

He wanted Kayla there when Avery signed.

He wanted Avery to see the replacement.

He wanted to turn her quiet dignity into defeat.

So Avery called Carter.

“He’s doing it tomorrow,” she said.

Carter paused.

“Is he putting it in writing?”

“Yes.”

“Is Kayla going to be present?”

“Yes.”

“Then don’t argue,” Carter said. “Let him talk. Let him hand you the papers. And sign only after he says the house is his.”

Avery closed her eyes.

“That will be hard.”

“I know,” Carter said. “But Eleanor built the trap. Scott is about to step into it.”

👉 The next morning, Scott arrived like a man celebrating victory — not knowing one sentence would cost him everything.
