Chapter 2

Three hours earlier, Evelyn had been sitting alone at the kitchen island, staring at a cold cup of tea.

The mansion was quiet.

Too quiet.

The kind of quiet that comes after years of a marriage dying in expensive rooms.

Carter had told her he had a late meeting.

He always called them meetings.

The first time Evelyn believed him.

The second time, she pretended to.

By the third, she knew the truth had a name.

Amber.

Young.

Pretty.

Always standing too close in company photos.

Always laughing at Carter’s jokes.

Always looking at Evelyn with that soft, smug pity mistresses use when they believe they are about to become wives.

Two months ago, Amber announced she was pregnant.

Not publicly.

Not officially.

But Carter made sure Evelyn found out.

He left the ultrasound photo on his desk.

Face up.

Beside his watch.

When Evelyn asked him about it, he did not deny anything.

He leaned back in his leather chair and said, “Maybe this marriage would’ve survived if you had given me a real family.”

Evelyn remembered how quiet she became.

Not because it did not hurt.

Because pain that deep does not always scream.

Sometimes it just removes your last illusion.

Carter came from old money.

Beatrice protected that money like a religion.

To them, Evelyn had always been useful.

A beautiful wife.

A polite hostess.

Someone who smiled beside Carter at charity dinners and made his temper look like confidence.

When he insulted her in private, Beatrice called it stress.

When he disappeared overnight, Beatrice called it business.

When Amber began attending family events, Beatrice called it “complicated.”

But Evelyn knew the truth.

They were not embarrassed by Carter’s betrayal.

They were embarrassed that Evelyn had not disappeared quietly.

So she started preparing.

She hired an attorney.

She copied financial records.

She saved messages.

She documented the threats Carter sent when drunk.

She learned the mansion’s security system because Carter had installed it under her name for insurance purposes and never cared to manage it himself.

She knew where the cameras pointed.

The gate.

The driveway.

The garage.

The front steps.

She knew the audio system did not record sound outside.

So she began recording with her phone whenever Carter came home furious.

👉 Evelyn had been preparing in silence for months — and tonight, Carter finally gave her the proof she needed.
