Chapter 6

The case moved faster than Carter expected.

The recording was clear.

The video was clearer.

The insurance company opened its own investigation after learning Carter had attempted to shift blame.

His previous probation made everything worse.

The company board suspended him from his position after the arrest became public.

The trust attorneys froze his discretionary access pending review.

For the first time in his life, Carter could not buy silence fast enough.

At the first hearing, he wore a navy suit and looked wounded.

He turned toward Evelyn before the judge entered.

“Evelyn,” he whispered, “please. We can make this go away.”

She looked at the man who had dragged her across broken glass and tried to hand her a crime like a bouquet.

“No,” she said.

Carter’s face hardened.

“You’ll regret this.”

Her attorney leaned forward.

“She won’t be speaking to you.”

That day, the judge issued a protective order.

Carter was charged with DUI, obstruction, and assault related to the driveway incident.

Additional civil penalties followed from the damaged property and insurance claims.

Beatrice’s influence did not save him.

It only exposed how often she had used it before.

Amber disappeared from his side within weeks.

She moved in with her sister.

Cooperated with investigators.

And gave birth months later without allowing Carter into the delivery room.

Evelyn did not pity her exactly.

But she understood something.

Amber had thought being chosen by Carter meant winning.

Instead, she had simply moved closer to the fire.

As for Beatrice, the women who once sat beside her at charity luncheons began canceling plans.

Not because they had suddenly developed morals.

Because scandal is contagious in old-money circles.

And Beatrice had been heard on a police recording instructing a battered wife to take the blame for her son.

That kind of sentence does not fit neatly into a gala speech.

Evelyn filed for divorce three days after the crash.

Carter fought it until the evidence list grew too long.

The settlement was clean.

No dramatic courtroom speech.

No screaming.

Just signatures.

Boundaries.

Freedom.

👉 Carter’s family had spent years buying silence — but this time, every recording, video, and court order told the truth.
