Chapter 8

One afternoon, Evelyn received a final envelope from her attorney.

The divorce decree.

Stamped.

Signed.

Complete.

She held it for a long time at her kitchen table.

Then her phone buzzed.

For a moment, her body stiffened out of old habit.

But it was not Carter.

It was a message from the officer who had responded that night, sent through the victim services coordinator.

Just confirming your case file is closed. I hope you’re safe.

Evelyn looked around her bright little kitchen.

At the flowers she bought herself.

At the keys on the counter.

At the phone that no longer had to record every dangerous conversation.

She typed back:

I am.

That evening, she drove to the lake.

The sun was setting over the water.

She stood alone with the wind in her hair and thought about the woman she had been in that driveway.

Barefoot.

Bruised.

Holding keys to a crime she did not commit.

Carter had believed she would accept blame because she had accepted pain before.

He had mistaken endurance for surrender.

That was his final mistake.

Evelyn watched the waves roll in, steady and silver under the fading light.

Then she deleted Carter’s number.

Not because she was pretending it never happened.

Because it had happened.

And she had survived it.

👉 Evelyn did not erase what happened that night — she erased Carter’s last way to reach her.
