Chapter 11 - Richard Finally Lost Control
Richard stopped giving interviews.
His attorneys did the talking.
They argued he intended only intimidation.
That he never wanted Daniel dead.
That Delaney exceeded instructions.
Sarah listened without reacting.
Daniel was still dead.
Intent mattered legally.
But consequence mattered too.
Frank Delaney testified that Richard ordered him to compromise the platform enough to “send a message.”
Delaney understood Daniel would use it.
He loosened the safety locking assembly.
Then left.
He expected a scare.
Instead, the platform shifted.
Daniel fell.
Delaney panicked.
Richard paid him afterward.
The prosecution presented the payment.
The voicemail.
The photograph at the worksite.
The whistleblower evidence.
The settlement offer Daniel rejected.
The post-death recording.
Richard eventually entered a plea agreement covering financial crimes, obstruction, and a serious criminal charge connected to causing Daniel’s death through the deliberate safety tampering he ordered.
He received a substantial prison sentence.
Delaney also received prison time, reduced in part for cooperation.
Marcus faced consequences for the original financial fraud and obstruction-related conduct.
His cooperation mattered.
It did not erase responsibility.
He avoided pretending it should.
His sentence included financial penalties, restitution obligations, and court-supervised consequences that removed him from positions of fiduciary authority.
Sarah watched the final hearing from a distance.
No triumph.
No dramatic smile.
Just relief.
Afterward, a reporter asked:
“Do you forgive Marcus Hayes?”
Sarah answered:
“That’s not what today was about.”
“What was it about?”
“Daniel.”
She walked away.
Lily waited outside with Sarah’s sister.
When Sarah came out, Lily ran to her.
“Is it over?”
Sarah knelt.
“The court part is mostly over.”
“Did Grandpa Hayes say Dad was good?”
Sarah almost laughed.
“No.”
“Then who did?”
“Everyone who finally looked at the evidence.”
Lily thought that was better.
So did Sarah.
Marcus approached carefully.
Tyler stood beside him.
“Sarah.”
She looked at him.
“I’m not asking you for anything.”
“Good.”
He nodded.
“I wanted Lily to have this.”
He held out an envelope.
Sarah did not take it immediately.
“What is it?”
“A letter Daniel wrote me.”
“When?”
“Ten years ago.”
Sarah stared.
Marcus had kept it all this time.
Daniel had written after the Ashford scandal began.
Marcus,
You still have time to decide what kind of man you are when your father isn’t in the room.
Sarah read it silently.
Then handed it back.
Marcus shook his head.
“It belongs with Lily.”
Sarah looked at him.
“No.”
Marcus seemed surprised.
Sarah continued:
“It belongs with you.”
He understood.
Daniel had written it to Marcus because Marcus was the one who needed to live with the choice.
