Chapter 2 - Daniel Carter Wasn’t Daniel Carter

Lily’s mother, Sarah Carter, arrived twenty minutes later.
The moment she saw Marcus Hayes, she stopped.
Marcus noticed.
Lily noticed too.
“Mom?”
Sarah recovered quickly.
She rushed to Lily.
“Are you hurt?”
“I’m okay.”
The vice principal explained everything.
Tyler’s shove.
Lily defending herself.
Marcus taking her backpack.
Then the patch.
Sarah’s expression changed when she saw it in Lily’s hand.
“You weren’t supposed to bring that to school.”
Lily looked confused.
“It was already on my bag.”
Sarah glanced at Marcus.
He looked equally unsettled.
The vice principal asked:
“Do you two know each other?”
Sarah answered immediately.
“No.”
Marcus said nothing.
That made the lie obvious.
Outside the office, Lily asked:
“Why did he call Dad Daniel Caster?”
Sarah stopped walking.
“What?”
“He said it.”
Sarah’s face went pale.
Lily’s father had always been Daniel Carter.
That was the name on family photographs.
The name Lily used.
The name on his obituary.
Daniel had died four years earlier in what Sarah had been told was a construction-site accident.
But Caster was the name embroidered on an old military-style fabric patch Daniel had kept locked away.
Sarah had never asked about it.
He once told her:
“It belonged to someone I owe everything to.”
She assumed it was sentimental.
Now Marcus Hayes had looked at it like a ghost.
That night, Sarah opened Daniel’s old storage box.
Inside were tax documents.
Photographs.
Tools.
A watch.
Nothing labeled Caster.
Then she found a false bottom.
Underneath was an envelope.
SARAH — ONLY IF SOMEONE RECOGNIZES THE PATCH.
Her hands began shaking.
Daniel had anticipated this.
She opened it.
The letter was short.
If someone knows the Caster name, do not trust what they tell you first.
Sarah stared at the sentence.
Then continued.
Daniel wrote that Carter was legally his name now.
But he had been born Daniel Caster.
He changed it at twenty-three.
Why?
He didn’t say.
He only wrote:
The Hayes family knows why.
Sarah sat down.
Marcus Hayes.
Then Daniel’s final warning:
If Marcus ever sees Lily, keep her away from him until you know what happened in Ashford County.
Sarah immediately searched the name.
Ashford County.
Ten years earlier, there had been a major private-school construction scandal.
Missing funds.
A collapsed gymnasium project.
Two employees blamed.
One disappeared from public records.
The other died.
One surname appeared repeatedly.
Caster.
Then another.
Hayes.

Marcus hadn’t recognized Lily because of an old family friendship.
The two families had been connected to a scandal that destroyed Daniel’s identity.
