Chapter 14 - BILL’S CHOICE

Mike had not felt Bill remove the photograph.
That hurt more than the stolen evidence.
Bill stood three paces away, rain dripping from the brim of his sheriff’s hat.
Wade’s ring rested in his left palm.
Sarah’s photograph in his right.
“Put them down,” Mike said.
Bill’s face collapsed.
“I can’t.”
Vale watched from beyond the gate.
His false Wade features had become expressionless again.
“You authorized the office access,” Mike said.
Bill nodded once.
“Using Wade’s identity?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“Sarah gave me the ring.”
“She gave it to you for protection.”
“She gave it to me to close Gatehouse.”
“Then why is it still open?”
Bill looked toward the damaged barrier.
“Because closing it requires both keys.”
Mike stared at the photograph.
“And you never had hers.”
“Not until tonight.”
Vale spoke softly.
“Sheriff, complete what you started.”
Bill’s hand tightened.
Mike moved closer.
“Did you kill them?”
Bill’s head jerked up.
“No.”
“Did you tell someone where Sarah lived?”
Bill did not answer.
Mike’s voice became colder.
“Did you?”
“I sent a warning through Gatehouse.”
“To whom?”
“To Robert.”
Wade’s voice entered the earpiece.
“I never received it.”
Bill looked toward the base.
“I used your old emergency channel.”
“That channel was compromised before I left the program.”
“I didn’t know.”
“You gave them Sarah’s location,” Mike said.
Bill’s eyes filled.
“I thought I was calling the only man who could protect her.”
“You led them to her.”
“I was trying to save her.”
The explanation was logical.
That made it worse.
Bill had not betrayed Sarah for money or power.
He had trusted the wrong system.
A system designed to weaponize trust.
Mike looked at the family photograph in Bill’s hand.
“Give it back.”
Bill shook his head.
“If I do, Vale takes it from you.”
“Then we stop him.”
“We can’t stop a network we can’t see.”
“We can stop the man standing in front of us.”
Vale’s voice sharpened.
“You think I am the enemy because I survived long enough to look guilty.”
Mike glanced toward him.
“Your daughter feared you.”
“My daughter feared the people who used my work.”
“She told us not to let Robert see the file.”
Vale’s gaze shifted toward the base.
“That was not Colonel Wade she meant.”
Mike felt the meaning before Vale explained.
“Robert is not only a name.”
Wade’s voice became tense.
“Do not listen to him.”
Vale continued.
“ROBERT is the internal designation for Gatehouse’s command authority.”
Torres’s breathing came through the earpiece.
“He’s telling the truth.”
Mike closed his eyes for half a second.
Not Robert Wade.
ROBERT.
An acronym.
A command system.
Sarah’s warning had not accused the colonel.
It had warned them not to let the network see the file.
Torres whispered, “The second control room labels the command layer R.O.B.E.R.T.”
“What does it stand for?” Mike asked.
“Remote Oversight for Border Emergency Response and Transit.”
Vale nodded.
“I designed it as a temporary crisis protocol.”
Wade said, “You designed an unelected command structure.”
“And you helped fund it.”
“I helped shut it down.”
“No. You helped move it.”
Mike looked between the real Wade’s distant voice and the false Wade standing outside the gate.
Both men carried pieces of the truth.
Neither had offered all of it.
Bill held up the photograph.
“Sarah’s key can force ROBERT into civilian audit mode. Every hidden route, authorization, and user becomes visible.”
“That would expose the murders,” Mike said.
“It would expose thousands of operations,” Wade replied. “Some legitimate. Some classified. Some protecting lives.”
Vale smiled faintly.
“Now you understand why nobody can simply turn it off.”
Torres interrupted.
“Mike, someone is coming.”
“Where?”
“In the lower corridor.”
“How many?”
“I can’t see.”
A door banged through her microphone.
Her breathing quickened.
Mike looked at Bill.
“Give me the photograph.”
Bill stared at him.
Then at Vale.
Then toward the base where Torres was trapped.
“I’m sorry,” he said.
Bill turned and ran toward the open hatch beneath the guard booth.
Mike lunged after him.
Vale shouted, “Stop him!”
The second dark vehicle accelerated toward the damaged gate.
Wade’s voice came urgently through the earpiece.
“Mike, the ring and key together can activate the vault from below.”
Mike reached the booth as Bill dropped onto the metal platform.
The hatch began descending.
Mike caught the edge with both hands.
Bill looked up from the darkness.
“Let go.”
“Give me the photograph.”
“If I activate the audit, they’ll hunt everyone connected to you.”
“They already murdered my family.”
“They will erase entire units. Deputies. Judges. Soldiers. Anyone who ever touched the network.”
Mike strained against the moving platform.
“Then don’t do it alone.”
Bill’s expression broke.
“You were always the son I had left.”
The hatch forced Mike’s fingers loose.
The platform descended.
Before the steel panel closed, Bill threw one object upward.
Mike caught it.
Wade’s damaged ring.
Bill had kept the photograph.
The hatch sealed.
Vale’s vehicle struck the gate barrier.
Steel bent.
Mike stared at the ring in his palm.
Torres’s voice burst through his earpiece.
“Mike, Bill just entered the lower control room.”
“Can you reach him?”
“No.”
“Can he activate ROBERT?”
A pause.
“Yes.”
The base lights went out.

Every building disappeared into darkness.
Then emergency sirens began to howl.
