Chapter 1 - The Name on the Seal

The judge slammed Captain Gabriel Rivera’s military file shut so hard that the wooden gavel jumped beside his hand.
The crack rolled through the courtroom.
Every whisper died.
At the plaintiffs’ table, attorney Malcolm Voss froze with one finger still aimed at Gabriel. Behind him, three wealthy fathers in dark tailored suits stopped exchanging satisfied smiles. Principal Dennis Holloway’s chin lifted slightly, but the confidence in his eyes flickered.
Fourteen-year-old Cameron Rivera flinched.
The movement pulled the fabric across the dressing beneath his shirt. Pain crossed his face before he could hide it. His shoulders folded inward, and his breath caught between clenched teeth.
Gabriel’s hand moved immediately to the space between his son’s shoulder blades.
Steady.
Protective.
Careful not to touch the damaged skin beneath the bandages.
Voss recovered first.

A low sound passed through the gallery.
Judge Hale lifted one hand.
Silence returned.
The trooper passed the sealed bag to the court clerk. She carried it to the bench without opening it.
Hale leaned forward.
He studied the evidence label.
His eyes narrowed.
Then he turned toward the principal.
“Principal Holloway,” he said quietly, “why is your name on the evidence seal?”
Holloway’s lips parted.
No answer came.
Voss moved first.
“Your Honor, I object to the introduction of any material not properly disclosed to counsel.”
“You may object after I determine why evidence in an active child-assault investigation disappeared from a public school,” Hale replied.
Richard Dunmore stepped away from Holloway.
So did the other two fathers.
Only a few inches.
But everyone saw it.
Cameron finally lifted his head.
His pale eyes found Holloway across the courtroom, and the shame that had kept him bent forward began to harden into something else.
Recognition.
Fear.
Gabriel felt the change beneath his hand.
“Dad,” Cameron whispered.
Gabriel leaned closer. “What is it?”
Cameron’s gaze stayed fixed on Holloway.
“That’s not the first seal.”
Gabriel’s fingers went still.

Cameron swallowed, his breathing uneven.
“I saw him replace it.”
