Chapter 8 - Cedar Ridge

Daniel did not drive to Cedar Ridge alone.
Samantha came.
Claire came.
A private security professional stayed nearby because Margaret had become increasingly unpredictable.
Emma stayed safely with Daniel’s closest friend.
Margaret was not told where they were going.
Two hours later, Daniel’s SUV turned onto the old lake road.
The house was still there.
Not sold.
Maintained.
Someone had been using it.
Daniel checked property records on his phone.
The title remained under a Reed family subsidiary.
Another lie.
The brass key opened the front door.
Inside, the air smelled faintly of cedar and dust.
Daniel remembered summers there with his father.
Then he noticed something.
A security camera.
Recent model.
Active indicator.
“Someone’s monitoring the property,” Samantha said.
They moved carefully.
The code 7149 opened a locked cabinet in the basement.
Inside were three document boxes.
Rachel had labeled them.
MRC.
VANCE.
MARGARET.
Daniel sat on the concrete floor.
His wife had built an entire evidence archive.
Bank records.
Emails.
Printed text messages.
Copies of invoices.
Not random accusations.
A timeline.
Rachel had discovered that Margaret had been stealing from Reed Holdings for years.
MRC was the first funnel.
Then funds moved into shell corporations.
Some paid Margaret’s debts.
Some covered losses from secret investments.
One supported Dr. Howard Vance’s failing private clinic.
Daniel turned to Samantha.
“Why was she paying Rachel’s doctor?”
They opened the VANCE box.
Most documents involved legitimate consulting arrangements between Vance and a Reed wellness project.
Then Daniel found a handwritten note from Rachel:
Vance changed my prescription after meeting with Margaret privately.
Ask for pharmacy records.
Daniel’s breathing changed.
Claire touched his shoulder.
“Danny…”
He kept reading.
Rachel had experienced worsening dizziness after the medication change.
She had confronted Vance.
He claimed the dosage was correct.
Rachel requested a second opinion.
That appointment had been scheduled for the day after she died.
Daniel closed his eyes.
Again, none of it proved anyone had intended to kill her.
But someone had lied.
Someone had hidden records.
Someone had concealed this house.
Then Samantha found another folder.
LIFE INSURANCE — DANIEL.
Daniel stared.
A $15 million policy had been taken out on him through a business succession plan.
Beneficiary:
Reed Family Holdings.
The company whose finances Margaret controlled at the time.
Claire whispered, “Oh my God.”
Then headlights swept across the basement windows.
A car had arrived outside.
Daniel stood.
Nobody else knew they were there.
Footsteps crossed the porch.
The front door opened.
May you like
And Margaret’s voice echoed through the house.
“Daniel?”
