Chapter 9 - Margaret Finally Lost Control

Daniel met Margaret at the top of the basement stairs.
“How did you find us?”
“My property has security alerts.”
“Your property?”
She realized the mistake.
Daniel stepped aside.
“Come downstairs.”
Margaret saw the boxes.
Her composure vanished.
She rushed toward them.
Samantha blocked her.
“Do not touch anything.”
“Those documents belong to my family!”
Daniel laughed without humor.
“They’re records of you stealing from it.”
Margaret turned on Claire.
“You brought him here?”
Claire stood her ground.
“Rachel did.”
Margaret’s face twisted.
“Rachel.”
The name came out like poison.
Daniel heard it.
For years his mother had pretended to mourn his wife.
Now there was nothing left to pretend.
“What did Rachel do to you?”
Margaret snapped.
“She wouldn’t stay out of things.”
Daniel went still.
“What things?”
“Business. Money. Your father’s legacy.”
“She was my wife.”
“She was an outsider.”
Claire flinched.
Daniel’s voice dropped.
“Emma is Rachel’s daughter.”
Margaret looked at him.
For one second, something cold crossed her face.
“She is also the reason everything leaves our side of the family.”
There it was.
The resentment.
Daniel finally understood why Margaret had obsessed over estate planning.
If Daniel died, Emma inherited control.
And because Emma was Rachel’s child, Margaret viewed that inheritance as leaving “her” family.
Samantha quietly activated her phone recorder.
Margaret didn’t notice.
She was unraveling.
“Your father built Reed Holdings,” Margaret said. “Then he left you control because you were his son. And you were prepared to let Rachel dictate everything.”
“She discovered you stealing.”
“I was recovering what was mine.”
“Four million dollars?”
“I gave forty years to that company!”
“So you forged payments?”
Margaret’s face went red.
“I moved money that should have been mine in the first place.”
Claire closed her eyes.
It was the closest thing to an admission they had gotten.
Daniel asked the question he feared most.
“And Dr. Vance?”
Margaret froze.
The rage disappeared.
“What about him?”
“You paid him.”
“For consulting.”
“Why did he change Rachel’s medication after meeting with you?”
Margaret looked toward the stairs.
Daniel stepped into her path.
“You’re not leaving until you answer that.”
Samantha interrupted.
“Daniel, do not block her.”
He moved aside immediately.
Margaret picked up her purse.
Then said something she could never take back.
“Rachel should have stopped when I warned her.”
Daniel stared at her.
“Warned her about what?”
Margaret realized her mistake.
She turned.
But Claire spoke first.
“You knew she was afraid.”
Margaret’s eyes filled with fury.
“She was going to destroy everything.”
Then she walked out.
Nobody stopped her.
Samantha immediately called the investigators handling the financial fraud.
Daniel remained in the basement.
Rachel’s boxes surrounded him.

And one question had become impossible to ignore.
What exactly had Margaret done after Rachel refused to stop?
