Chapter 1 - Left Beside the Highway

“You’re ruining everything.”
Diane released Sophie’s arm so abruptly that the eight-year-old girl stumbled across the loose gravel.
Before Sophie could regain her balance, her grandmother hurled the oversized olive-green backpack against her chest.
The impact knocked her backward into a rusted utility pole.
Sophie wrapped both arms around the bag.
Her knees trembled.
Her throat burned from crying.
“Grandma, please don’t leave me.”
Diane’s face twisted with disgust.
She shoved Sophie’s reaching hand away from the open car door.
Inside the sedan, Harold slapped the steering wheel.
“Get in,” he snapped. “We’re done with her.”
Diane climbed inside and locked the door.
Sophie struck the window once with her palm.
“Please!”
Neither grandparent looked at her again.
The sedan accelerated from the shoulder, spraying dust and small stones toward Sophie’s legs.
She ran after it for two desperate steps.
Her sneaker slipped.
She dropped to one knee, clutching the backpack so tightly it hurt.
The car disappeared down the rural highway.
Sophie remained beside the utility pole, alone beneath the bright afternoon sun.
Her stomach still cramped from carsickness.
Her mouth tasted sour.
She had no idea where she was.
Then she heard the deep roar of a semi-truck approaching in the nearest lane.
Sophie pressed her back against the pole.
The wind from the truck pulled at her tangled hair and dusty shirt.
She squeezed her eyes shut.
Suddenly, brakes screamed across the gravel behind her.
A silver compact car stopped several yards away.
The driver’s door flew open.
“Sophie! Get away from the road!”
Her mother sprinted toward her.
Mara dropped to both knees and pulled Sophie against her chest, turning her own body between the child and the highway.
“Mom…” Sophie sobbed. “They said I was disgusting.”
Mara’s face went still.
She held Sophie tighter.
Then something inside the backpack vibrated.
Mara opened the top zipper.
A phone lay partly exposed beneath a stained travel towel.
Its voice recorder was still running.
Mara slowly looked toward the distant sedan disappearing down the highway.

Her panic hardened into cold rage.
👉 Mara had found Sophie alive—but the recording was about to reveal that abandoning her had not been an impulsive act.
