Chapter 5 - The Story Diane Invented

Diane told the clinic that Mara had been behaving irrationally since her divorce.

She claimed Sophie had begged to stay with her grandparents.

She said Mara had chased their vehicle down the highway and forcibly taken the child.

Not one word was true.

The physician had already reviewed Sophie’s physical condition.

Dust on her clothes.

Gravel embedded in one knee.

Dehydration.

Bruising.

Fear whenever Diane’s name was mentioned.

“I did not believe the caller,” the doctor said. “But I wanted you prepared.”

Mara nodded.

“Thank you.”

Sophie was lying beneath a light blanket in the treatment room, breathing more easily after medication.

Mara stepped into the hallway and called her younger brother, Luke.

He answered immediately.

“Mara? Mom said you’re having some kind of breakdown.”

“How long ago did she call?”

“Ten minutes.”

“What did she tell you?”

“That you threatened them and took Sophie.”

Mara closed her eyes.

Diane was creating witnesses.

She was calling family members before Mara could explain.

“She and Dad left Sophie beside Highway 14.”

Luke laughed once in disbelief.

“No.”

“I found her alone near a utility pole.”

“That doesn’t make sense.”

“I have a recording.”

Silence.

“What recording?”

“Mom’s phone was in Sophie’s backpack.”

Mara played a short section.

Diane’s voice filled the call.

Leave her somewhere Mara will find her eventually.

Luke stopped speaking.

Mara continued with the section where Sophie asked for her inhaler.

When it ended, Luke whispered, “Oh my God.”

“She has bruises.”

“Mara…”

“They locked her in the laundry room during visits.”

Luke breathed heavily.

“I didn’t know.”

“Neither did I.”

Then Luke said something unexpected.

“When we were kids, Mom used to lock me in the pantry.”

Mara stared at the clinic wall.

“What?”

“You were too young to remember.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because Dad said she only did it when I embarrassed her.”

The sentence matched Sophie’s experience almost exactly.

Diane had not suddenly become cruel.

She had repeated a pattern.

Luke had hidden it for decades.

“Will you tell someone officially?” Mara asked.

He hesitated.

“If I do, Mom will destroy me.”

“She left Sophie beside a highway.”

“I know.”

“She took her inhaler.”

“I know.”

Luke began crying quietly.

“I’ll tell the truth.”

Mara thanked him.

Then she called Sophie’s father, Ryan.

They had been divorced for two years.

Their relationship was respectful but distant.

Ryan listened without interrupting.

When Mara finished, he said, “I’m coming.”

“You’re four hours away.”

“I don’t care.”

She expected him to accuse her of poor judgment for trusting her parents.

Instead, he said, “This is not your fault.”

The words released something inside her.

Mara leaned against the wall and cried silently.

After the call, she returned to Sophie’s room.

Her daughter was awake.

“Is Dad mad?” Sophie asked.

“No.”

“Is he coming?”

“Yes.”

Sophie’s eyes filled with relief.

Then Diane’s phone vibrated with a new message.

It came from Harold.

DELETE THE RECORDING BEFORE MARA HEARS THE PART ABOUT THE MONEY.

Mara stared at the screen.

The abandonment had been connected to something more than carsickness.

May you like

Something involving money.

👉 Diane and Harold had not only mistreated Sophie—the recording contained a financial secret they were desperate to erase.
