Chapter 9 - The Papers Diane Wanted Signed

Diane entered the clinic wearing expensive sunglasses despite the darkness.
She placed the inhaler on the reception counter.
“There. She has her medication.”
Mara stared at her.
“You took it from her.”
“I forgot it was in my purse.”
“The recording says she asked for it.”
Diane’s lips tightened.
“You are enjoying this.”
“Enjoying what?”
“Making us look like monsters.”
Ryan stepped beside Mara.
“No one had to make you look like anything.”
Diane ignored him.
She held out the documents.
“These are temporary caregiving papers. Sophie needs stability while Mara calms down.”
Mara did not touch them.
Naomi took the packet.
The first page requested temporary medical authority.
The second allowed Diane to enroll Sophie in residential treatment.
The third permitted trust funds to pay associated costs.
Diane had arrived within hours of abandoning Sophie and was already trying to formalize control.
“You planned to take her tonight,” Mara said.
“She needs responsible adults.”
“You left her beside a highway.”
“You keep saying that as if we pushed her into traffic.”
Sophie’s voice came from the hallway.
“You said you hoped a truck would scare me quiet.”
Everyone turned.
Sophie stood beside Luke, holding his hand.
Diane removed her sunglasses.
“That is not what I said.”
“It’s on your phone.”
Sophie’s voice shook, but she did not look away.
Diane’s expression changed.
Not guilt.
Anger.
“You stole my phone.”
“You put it in my backpack.”
“You should have returned it.”
“I tried.”
“Do not talk back to me.”
Mara stepped between them.
“You will never speak to her like that again.”
Diane laughed softly.
“You think one dramatic night makes you a strong mother?”
“No. Believing my daughter does.”
Diane turned toward Ryan.
“You know Mara cannot handle stress.”
Ryan replied, “She handled finding our child abandoned on a highway better than either of you handled a little vomit.”
Harold entered the clinic.
His face was red with anger.
“This is family business.”
Naomi faced him.
“It became legal business when you forged trust authorization.”
Harold stopped.
Diane looked at him sharply.
He realized they knew.
Naomi continued.
“The transfer has been frozen.”
Diane’s face lost color.
“You had no right.”
“Mara is the primary trustee.”
“She signed authority to me.”
“Through deception.”
Diane moved toward Sophie.
“Come with us. Your mother is confused.”
Sophie backed into Luke.
“No.”
The single word stunned everyone.
Diane reached for her wrist.
Mara caught Diane’s hand before contact.
“Do not touch my daughter.”
For several seconds, mother and daughter stared at each other.
Then Diane whispered, “After everything I did for you.”
Mara released her hand.
“You taught me to confuse fear with love. I’m not teaching Sophie the same lesson.”
The clinic physician asked Diane and Harold to leave.
Harold pointed at Mara.
“You will regret humiliating us.”
Sophie stepped from behind Luke.
“No,” she said quietly. “I regret trusting you.”
Diane’s face hardened.
She turned and walked out.
But Harold remained long enough to deliver one final warning.
“Victor has documents showing Sophie already enrolled in the program.”
Naomi looked at Mara.
