Chapter 15 - The Locket Was Finally Opened

For months, everyone had wondered what was inside Evelyn’s locket.
Rebecca placed it before the judge.
“The authentication function required that this object remain intact until the sealed deposit was legally admitted.”
That condition had now been satisfied.
Nathan looked at Grace.
Grace nodded.
Rebecca opened the locket.
Inside was no fortune.
No secret key.
No dramatic photograph.
There was a tiny folded strip of archival paper and a micro-storage chip sealed behind it.
The paper contained three handwritten names:
Sarah.
Emily.
Grace.
Below them, Evelyn had added one more after Lily’s birth.
Lily.
The chip contained a dated video.
Evelyn appeared on screen.
Older.
Tired.
Completely lucid.
“I created this recording because documents around me have been altered.”
She explained that she had discovered Sarah’s descendants after finding records Harold failed to destroy.
She described confronting Harold.
He denied everything.
Then Evelyn made a statement that caused Victoria to grip the courtroom table.
“Victoria Hale subsequently approached me and offered to resolve the matter privately if I agreed never to recognize Grace Bennett or her child.”
Nathan stared at Victoria.
Evelyn continued.
“I refused.”
The video included metadata verified by independent experts and contemporaneous emails confirming the meeting.
Victoria had not merely discovered Harold’s scheme.
She had actively tried to preserve it.
Evelyn’s final words were for Nathan.
“If Grace’s child is yours, do not make my mistake. Family is not a name on paper. It is who you refuse to abandon when protecting them becomes expensive.”
Nathan lowered his head.
Grace silently cried.
Victoria suddenly stood.
“This is insane!”
Her attorney grabbed her arm.
She pulled away.
“That old woman hated me!”
The judge ordered her to sit.
Victoria pointed at Grace.
“She came into my life and took everything!”
Grace finally answered.
“I never wanted your life.”
Victoria laughed wildly.
“No. You just brought the one child who could expose all of it.”
The courtroom went silent.
Victoria realized what she had said.
Her attorney closed his eyes.
Nathan stared at her.
That was the real Victoria.
Not the elegant fiancée.
Not the wounded plaintiff.
A woman who had reduced his daughter to a threat on a balance sheet.
The judge did not announce instant criminal guilt.
Instead, the court preserved the trust assets, referred relevant evidence to authorities, and rejected Victoria’s attempt to use the civil proceeding to discredit Lily’s verified parentage.
Outside, reporters shouted questions.
Nathan ignored them.

He walked beside Grace and carried Lily.
But justice was only beginning.
