Chapter 9 - The Mark Beneath the Silver

Rebecca Sloan met them inside her law office.
Nathan brought Grace and Lily.
The locket remained closed.
Rebecca examined only its exterior through a magnifying lens.
“There.”
Nathan leaned closer.
Along the bottom edge was a microscopic serial number.
Rebecca opened Evelyn’s estate inventory.
The number matched.
“This proves the locket belonged to Evelyn,” Rebecca said.
“That’s all?”
“No.”
Evelyn had registered the locket as the physical authentication key for a sealed legal deposit.
Without it, the deposit could not be released.
Nathan stared at Rebecca.
“So Victoria wasn’t afraid of what was inside.”
“She was afraid you would bring it here.”
Grace held Lily tighter.
“What deposit?”
Rebecca retrieved a sealed envelope.
“Evelyn created it five months before her death.”
She scanned the locket’s serial number and entered a second authorization code.
A secure archive unlocked.
Nathan expected a will.
Instead, the first document was a sworn affidavit.
Evelyn Mercer stated that she had discovered unauthorized transfers, forged signatures, manipulated correspondence, and interference with a family bloodline investigation.
She named Harold Vance.
But not Victoria.
Nathan frowned.
“Why not?”
Attached records showed Harold had used his legal access to alter family documents.
But every suspicious instruction had come through an encrypted account labeled V.H.
Victoria Hale.
Grace covered her mouth.
Nathan kept reading.
Then he reached the 1992 covenant.
Sarah Mercer had been granted a conditional bloodline interest after Evelyn reconciled with her.
If Sarah had children, those descendants retained inheritance rights.
Nathan looked at Rebecca.
“Did she?”
Rebecca turned to Grace.
Grace looked equally confused.
“No,” Rebecca said. “Not according to the original family record.”
“Then why investigate?”
“Because Evelyn discovered the record was false.”
Rebecca produced a birth certificate.
Sarah had given birth to a daughter in 1994.
That daughter’s name made Grace stand so quickly her chair nearly fell.
Emily Bennett.
Grace’s mother.
Nathan looked at Grace.
Grace looked at Lily.
“No…”
Rebecca nodded.
“Grace, Sarah Mercer was your grandmother.”
The room went silent.
Nathan finally understood.
Lily wasn’t only his biological daughter.
Through Grace, she was also Sarah Mercer’s great-granddaughter.
Two branches of the Mercer bloodline had unexpectedly reunited in one child.
And under the old covenant, Lily’s existence could radically alter control of the family trust.
Nathan whispered, “Victoria knew.”
May you like
Rebecca’s expression hardened.
“She knew before Evelyn died.”
