Chapter 1 - The Paper on the Floor

“Don’t act like you belong in this family.”
Evelyn Bennett grabbed fifteen-month-old Maddie by the hair and slammed her face into the birthday cake.
Frosting exploded across the table.
Maddie jerked backward in her high chair, choking on a sob, pink icing covering her cheeks and eyelashes.
That was the moment Rachel ran into the living room.
“Maddie!”
She tore her daughter out of the chair and pressed the crying child against her chest.
Then she turned.
Her palm cracked across Evelyn’s face.
“Don’t you ever touch my child!”
Evelyn stumbled against the birthday table.
Flowers shook.
A plate crashed to the floor.
Then Grant walked in.
He saw his mother clutching her cheek.
He didn’t ask what happened.
He didn’t look at Maddie’s frosting-covered face.
He lunged at Rachel.
His fist struck her across the face.
Rachel staggered.
Maddie screamed.
“How dare you hit my mother?” Grant shouted.
Rachel stared at her husband in disbelief.
Behind her, Maddie whimpered:
“Dad…”
Grant looked at the little girl.
For one second, something flickered in his face.
Then he looked at Evelyn.
And made his choice.
“She isn’t my child.”
The room went silent.
Even Evelyn smiled.
Rachel’s shock disappeared.
She handed Maddie carefully to the nearby playpen, walked straight to Grant—
and slapped him.
Hard.
Grant lost his balance and hit the floor.
Then Rachel reached into her purse.
She pulled out an envelope.
DNA TEST RESULTS.
She threw it at his chest.
“Then read whose name is written on this paper.”
Grant picked it up.
His eyes moved across the first page.
The color drained from his face.
Evelyn noticed immediately.
“What does it say?”
Grant didn’t answer.
His hands started shaking.
Rachel picked Maddie up.
She headed for the door.
Grant finally looked at her.
“Rachel…”
She didn’t stop.
Because the paper didn’t say what Grant expected.
May you like
And it didn’t say what Evelyn expected either.
The truth behind Maddie’s birth was something both of them had spent fifteen months misunderstanding.
