Chapter 8 - What Michael Actually Said
Everyone expected another twist.
Maybe Michael had secretly wanted a child.
Maybe Evelyn had been telling the truth about that much.
Allison’s statement was more complicated.
Months before Michael died, he asked Allison a hypothetical question at a family fundraiser.
“If I die, can my sample ever help my brother if he needs it?”
Allison remembered laughing.
She told him:
“Not without formal consent and proper legal arrangements.”
Michael replied:
“Grant always wanted kids.”
That was all.
No written authorization.
No consent.
No instruction.
A grieving conversation.
Evelyn overheard it.
And years later, she transformed it into permission.
Grant sat silently after hearing the statement.
“That sounds like Michael.”
Rachel looked at him.
“Kind.”
“Yeah.”
“He was trying to help you.”
Grant nodded.
“Probably.”
Then his expression hardened.
“But he didn’t consent.”
Exactly.
Allison admitted Evelyn approached her after Grant and Rachel’s second failed fertility cycle.
She said:
“Michael wanted this.”
Allison refused initially.
Then Evelyn became persistent.
She showed her the forged amendment.
She said Michael had updated his wishes privately.
Allison suspected the paperwork was questionable.
But she chose not to verify.
Then came the $25,000.
She rationalized it as a loan.
She told herself Michael and Grant shared close genetics.
She told herself the baby would still belong to the family.
She told herself nobody would be harmed.
Rachel stared at her during the proffer session summary.
Everyone had told themselves a story.
Evelyn:
Michael deserved a legacy.
Allison:
The genetics are still in the family.
Grant:
Maybe Rachel cheated.
Every adult rationalization landed on Maddie.
The one person who had no choice.
Allison also revealed Evelyn planned to disclose the truth eventually.
“When?”
Grant asked.
“After Rachel became pregnant.”
“Why?”
“She believed once there was a baby, nobody would undo it.”
Rachel felt cold.
That was exactly what happened.
Once Maddie existed, every legal and ethical question became emotionally explosive.
Nobody could “reverse” a child.
Evelyn had counted on love becoming leverage.
And she was right.
Grant loved Maddie.
Rachel loved Maddie.
That didn’t make the misconduct less serious.
It made it more cruel.
Allison turned over old voicemails.
One from Evelyn said:
“When Grant sees Michael in that baby’s face, he’ll understand.”
Grant listened.
His expression collapsed.
Because he suddenly remembered Maddie’s first months.
Evelyn constantly said:
“She looks like Michael.”
Everyone laughed it off.
Grant thought she was grieving.
Now he knew she was watching her plan become visible.
Rachel whispered:
“She was testing us.”
Grant nodded.
Then another voicemail played.
“If Rachel gets possessive, we’ll deal with that later.”
Rachel went cold.
“Possessive?”
Grant looked at her.
Evelyn had never viewed Rachel as Maddie’s unquestioned mother.
Only the woman who carried Michael’s child.
That explained the hostility.
The constant criticism.
The phrase:
She doesn’t belong in this family.
It had never really been about Maddie.
It was about Rachel.
Evelyn believed Maddie belonged to the Bennetts more than she belonged to her own mother.
