Chapter 10 - Vanessa’s Oldest Lie

Rachel kept a letter Vanessa wrote nine years earlier.

Not stolen.

Given to her.

Vanessa had asked Rachel to keep it in case she later became emotionally overwhelmed and tried to reverse history in her own mind.

Reading it was painful.

Vanessa wrote that she had chosen adoption freely.

She wasn't ready to parent.

She didn't know whether the biological father could be found.

She wanted her daughter to have stability.

She thanked Rachel for refusing to make the decision for her.

That letter destroyed the story Vanessa had been telling herself for years.

Rachel hadn't forced her.

Rachel had supported her.

Vanessa's grief was real.

Her regret might have been real.

But the villain she'd created out of Rachel wasn't.

When confronted with the existence of her own letter through the legal process, Vanessa claimed she'd written it under pressure.

Then Caroline produced old messages.

Vanessa repeatedly described the adoption as her decision.

Again and again.

The truth became impossible to bury.

But none of that excused what happened to Sophie.

The haircut.

The intimidation.

The obsessive searches.

Those were investigated separately from the old adoption story.

I filed for divorce.

I sought every appropriate protective measure available for Sophie.

Vanessa fought.

Of course she did.

She claimed I'd turned against her because I was obsessed with Rachel.

She claimed Sophie had exaggerated.

Then photographs documented the chopped hair.

Witness accounts documented her behavior.

Rachel’s hidden materials explained motive.

And Vanessa’s own messages showed how desperately she had been searching for the DNA evidence.

The most damning message was sent to Linda weeks before I returned unexpectedly.

**If Sophie found Rachel's capsule, I need it before Daniel gets home.**

There it was.

She knew the capsule existed.

She knew Sophie might have it.

And she knew I couldn't see it.

The legal process wasn't instant.

Nothing about real justice was.

But Vanessa's carefully built image of the loving new wife began collapsing under evidence she created herself.

Then the adoptive parents of Vanessa’s first daughter sent a message through the intermediary.

They had told their daughter an age-appropriate version of the situation.

She had one question for me.

Not Vanessa.

Me.

**Did you know about me?**

I stared at those five words for a long time.

May you like

Then I wrote the only truthful answer I could.

**No. But I’m sorry I didn’t.**
