Chapter 5 - The Signature That Wasn't Mine

The bank still had archived transaction records.
Video preservation was limited after so many years, but documentation remained.
The person who collected several estate items had presented authorization that appeared to carry my signature.
I had never signed it.
The employee's notes described the collector as a woman.
That alone proved little.
Then we found the phone number provided on the form.
It belonged to Vanessa.
Not her current number.
An older one registered while she still used Mercer.
My marriage suddenly felt like a crime scene.
Vanessa hadn't entered my life after Rachel died.
She had been circling it before.
My attorney advised me not to accuse her publicly.
Instead, we documented everything.
The questionable authorization.
The missing case.
The laboratory access.
Rachel’s notes.
Then something unexpected happened.
Vanessa called Emily.
Emily put the call on speaker.
“I just want Sophie’s things returned.”
Emily looked at me.
“What things?”
“The stuff Daniel took.”
“You mean his daughter?”
Vanessa went quiet.
Then:
“The stuffed lamb.”
There it was.
She didn't ask for jewelry.
Documents.
Her own clothes.
She wanted Rachel’s toy.
Emily asked why.
“It's sentimental.”
“To whom?”
Vanessa hung up.
We opened the lamb again.
The capsule compartment was empty.
The brass key was out.
But deep inside the stuffing, I felt something rigid.
A photograph.
Rachel.
Much younger.
Standing beside another woman.
The second woman's face had been partially torn away.
On the back, Rachel had written a date from nine years earlier.
And one sentence:
**She thinks I never found out.**
Emily stared at me.
“Is that Vanessa?”
Only half the woman's face remained.
But the hair.
The posture.
The necklace.
I had seen that necklace before.
Vanessa kept one just like it locked in her jewelry box.
I suddenly remembered Rachel owning a matching necklace.
I had assumed it was an old friendship gift.
Maybe it was.
The question was what happened to that friendship.
Nathan helped us identify someone else in Rachel’s old correspondence.
A former college roommate named Caroline.
When I called her and mentioned Vanessa Mercer, she gasped.
“You finally found out?”
“Found out what?”
Caroline went silent.
May you like
Then she asked me a question I never expected.
“Daniel… did Rachel ever tell you Vanessa had been pregnant?”
