Chapter 1

PART 1:
“You came from nothing.”
Julian Mercer said it with a smile.
Then he stepped closer to his pregnant wife in front of the entire courtroom.
“You’re going back to nothing.”
The room went silent.
Clara stood beside the plaintiff’s table with one hand wrapped around her eight-month belly.
Her face had gone pale after the judge’s temporary ruling.
Her knees felt weak, but she refused to sit down.
Reporters filled the back row.
Julian’s business partners sat behind him.
His mother dabbed fake tears with a tissue.
And beside him stood the woman he had sworn was “just a consultant,” wearing a soft beige dress and a diamond bracelet Clara recognized.
Her bracelet.
Julian adjusted his tie like the courtroom belonged to him.
Like Clara was already erased.
He leaned in just enough for the front rows to hear.
“No parents. No money. No name anyone cares about,” he said. “Did you really think a girl from foster homes could take me on?”
Clara’s eyes filled with tears.
Not because he had surprised her.
Because he had finally said out loud what he had made her feel for years.
Small.
Alone.
Disposable.
She pressed her palm gently against her belly, as if reminding her baby that they were still there.
Still breathing.
Still together.
Then Clara lifted her chin.
Her voice shook, but it did not disappear.
“My baby still has me.”
Julian laughed.
A cold, ugly sound.
“That’s adorable.”
A few people in the courtroom looked away.
Then the double doors at the back began to tremble.
Not open.
Tremble.
As if someone outside had stopped asking permission.
Clara turned.
So did Julian.
The doors pushed open.
A woman in a white suit stood at the entrance.
She was older, elegant, and still in a way that made the air feel sharper around her.
Two security guards stood behind her.
A lawyer walked at her side carrying a leather folder.
But Clara did not notice the guards first.
She noticed the woman’s eyes.
Blue.
Cold.
Bright.
Exactly like hers.
Clara stopped breathing.
Her hand rose slowly to her own face, like she had just seen a mirror from another lifetime.
Julian’s smile collapsed.
“What is she doing here?” he snapped.
The woman walked down the aisle without looking away from Clara.
Every whisper died.
Someone in the back muttered her name.
“Eleanor Sterling.”
Julian went white.
The woman reached Clara, placed one steady hand on her shoulder, and turned toward Julian.
“My daughter,” Eleanor said, her voice calm enough to frighten the whole room, “will live far better without you.”
Clara broke.
A sob escaped her before she could stop it.
Daughter?
She did not understand.
Julian looked like the floor had opened beneath him.
Eleanor’s attorney opened the leather folder.
Inside was a sealed DNA report.

And the lie Julian had built his victory on began to burn.
👉 But before Clara could understand who this woman was, the truth had to go back to the lonely life Julian used against her…
