Chapter 1: The Torn Sleeve

Chapter 1: The Torn Sleeve
“She did this to herself!”
Eleanor Sterling screamed it from the hospital floor.
Her black dress was wrinkled.
Her hair was loose around her face.
She looked like a grieving mother, a terrified grandmother, a woman desperate to explain a tragedy before anyone else could speak.
But Caleb did not look at her like a son anymore.
He looked at her like a witness.
The automatic glass doors had just burst open behind him.
Cold hospital light flooded the lobby.
Caleb rushed in wearing a black suit, carrying his nine-month-pregnant wife in both arms.
Her white dress was stained with dirt.
Her head rested limp against his shoulder.
Purple bruises marked her wrist, her neck, and the bare skin near her collarbone.
Her breathing was shallow.
Too shallow.
Doctors and nurses turned at once.
A security guard reached for his radio.
Two police officers near the front desk stopped mid-conversation.
Behind Caleb, Eleanor dropped to her knees and grabbed for the hem of his wife’s dress.
Caleb twisted sharply left before she could touch her.
“Don’t,” he said.
His voice was not loud.
That made it worse.
Eleanor lifted one shaking hand and pointed at the woman in his arms.
“She did this to herself! She was hysterical! She fell!”
Caleb tightened his hold.
His wife’s eyes fluttered open.
For one second, she looked lost.
Then she saw Eleanor.
Fear moved across her face before pain did.
Her lips trembled.
“Don’t let her near my baby.”
The lobby went silent.
A male doctor in a white coat ran toward them with two nurses.
“Sir, bring her this way.”
Caleb took one step.
Then he stopped.
His wife’s right hand was clenched tightly against her chest.
Something black stuck out between her fingers.
A torn piece of fabric.
Caleb looked down.
Then slowly turned toward Eleanor.
Eleanor’s hand lowered.
The color drained from her face.
Caleb used his thumb to gently keep the fabric in his wife’s palm, making sure no one could take it from her.
His eyes stayed on his mother.
“Then why is she holding your sleeve?”
Eleanor opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.
👉 But the torn fabric was only the first piece of proof Eleanor never expected Caleb to see.
