Chapter 2: The Cameras Were Still Recording

Chapter 2: The Cameras Were Still Recording

One of the officers stepped between Eleanor and Caleb.

The doctor examined Caleb’s wife quickly in his arms, his face hardening when he saw the finger-shaped bruises on her wrist and shoulder.

Then the elevator doors opened.

A female investigator in a gray suit stepped out with two more officers.

In her hand was a tablet.

On the screen was paused security footage from inside the Sterling mansion.

The investigator walked straight toward Caleb, then looked at Eleanor.

“The house cameras were still recording.”

Eleanor froze.

Her lips parted.

Her eyes flicked toward the exit.

Caleb looked down at his wife.

Then back at the woman who had raised him.

And for the first time in his life, he saw exactly what his mother was capable of when she thought no one was watching.

Three years earlier, Caleb had brought his wife home to meet Eleanor with hope in his chest.

He knew his mother was difficult.

Everyone knew that.

Eleanor Sterling did not simply enter rooms.

She controlled them.

She controlled dinner seating.

Family photos.

Holiday plans.

Charity guest lists.

Who was allowed to speak.

Who was expected to listen.

After Caleb’s father died, Eleanor turned the Sterling name into a throne and sat on it like no one had the right to ask her to move.

But Caleb believed love could soften her.

He was wrong.

The first time Eleanor met his wife, she smiled politely, kissed her cheek, and said, “You’re very sweet.”

Then, while Caleb was parking the car after dinner, Eleanor leaned close and whispered, “Sweet girls rarely survive in families like ours.”

His wife told herself it was a warning.

Not a threat.

That was how it began.

Small cuts.

Comments about her clothes.

Her family.

Her job.

Her “simple” manners.

The way she said thank you too often.

The way she laughed too easily.

The way Caleb looked at her like her opinion mattered.

That bothered Eleanor most.

Before marriage, Caleb had always asked his mother what she thought.

After marriage, he asked his wife.
