Chapter 5: The Hallway Attack

Chapter 5: The Hallway Attack
Eleanor grabbed the wife’s wrist and yanked her back from the nursery door.
Pain shot up the wife’s arm.
“Let go.”
“You will sign.”
“No.”
Eleanor shoved the papers against her chest.
The wife pushed them away.
Then a sharp contraction bent through her body.
She grabbed the wall.
Eleanor looked at her.
For one second, fear crossed her face.
Then calculation replaced it.
The wife tried to reach for her phone.
Eleanor slapped it out of her hand.
It hit the floor and slid under the table.
“I need a doctor,” the wife gasped.
“You need to calm down.”
Another pain came.
Harder.
She tried to move toward the stairs.
Eleanor stepped in front of her.
“You will not create a scene and blame me.”
“I’m not blaming you. I need help.”
“You always need something.”
The wife pushed past her.
Eleanor grabbed her shoulder.
That was when the wife clutched at anything she could reach.
Her fingers caught the sleeve of Eleanor’s black dress.
Fabric tore.
Eleanor stumbled back.
The wife fell against the wall, then sank to her knees, one hand under her belly.
For the first time, Eleanor looked toward the ceiling.
The security camera in the hallway blinked red.
She smiled faintly.
Then walked to the control panel and shut it off.
At least, she thought she did.
What Eleanor did not know was that Caleb had changed the security system after a break-in at one of the guest houses.
Manual shutdown no longer erased footage.
It sent an alert.
Then uploaded the previous ten minutes to cloud storage.
Caleb’s phone received that alert in Boston during a meeting.
He ignored it at first.
Then a second alert arrived.
Hallway camera disconnected.
Nursery camera disconnected.
Emergency sound trigger detected.
That last one made him leave the room mid-sentence.
He opened the app in the hallway outside the conference room.
And watched his wife begging his mother to call for help.
He watched Eleanor block the stairs.
Watched the paper shoved toward her.
Watched his wife fall.
Watched the camera go black.
Caleb called 911 before the clip finished.
Then he called the investigator his attorney had hired weeks earlier after suspicious changes were made to the trust documents.

Then he booked the first private flight home.
👉 But Eleanor did not know Caleb had already seen the truth — so she followed him to the hospital to finish the lie.
