Chapter 2

PART 2:

Emily turned toward Ethan.

For one second, relief hit her so hard she almost collapsed.

Then her stomach tightened.

Pain bent through her.

She grabbed the sink.

Ethan dropped his bag and crossed the kitchen in two strides.

He caught her before she hit the floor.

“Em,” he whispered, pulling her carefully into his arms. “Baby, look at me.”

Teresa stepped forward fast.

“She’s being dramatic,” she said. “She has been lazy all day.”

Ethan’s eyes flicked to the sponge clutched in Emily’s hand.

He took it gently from her fingers.

Then he turned toward his mother and sisters.

His voice was low.

Cold.

“Step away from my wife.”

The room went silent.

One sister lowered the phone.

Ethan looked straight at Teresa.

“Tonight,” he said, “you all leave.”

Teresa’s mouth opened.

Emily held her belly and doubled over with another wave of pain.

And for the first time that night, everyone stopped pretending this was just about dishes.

Two months earlier, Ethan had asked Emily if his mother could stay with them for a little while.

Teresa’s apartment lease had ended unexpectedly, and Ethan’s younger sisters were “between places.”

That was how he described it.

Temporarily.

Just until they found something.

Emily had hesitated.

She loved Ethan.

She knew he loved his family.

And she knew Teresa had never really accepted her.

From the day Ethan introduced Emily, Teresa looked at her like she was a stain on expensive fabric.

Emily came from a small town.

Her mother worked in a school cafeteria.

Her father drove trucks.

Emily had worked two jobs through college and still carried student loans.

To Teresa, that meant Emily was not hardworking.

It meant she was beneath them.

When Ethan married her anyway, Teresa smiled through the wedding photos and whispered to Emily in the bathroom, “Enjoy it while it lasts. Men like my son eventually remember where they came from.”

Emily never told Ethan.

Not then.

She did not want to start her marriage by putting a wall between him and his mother.

That was Emily’s first mistake.

Her second was believing Teresa would be kinder once the baby came.

👉 Because the moment Ethan left the house, Teresa’s kindness disappeared completely…
