Chapter 5

PART 5:
One sister snorted.
“She can hold a phone all day, but not a dish.”
Emily turned to her.
“I haven’t sat down since seven this morning.”
“Maybe if you moved faster, you’d be done.”
The phone came out then.
The sister started recording.
Not to protect anyone.
To mock her.
“Look at her,” the sister said. “Eight months pregnant and acting like loading a dishwasher is combat.”
Emily reached for the counter.
Her vision blurred for a second.
Teresa saw it.
And still, she picked up the dirty pan.
“Stop crying and clean it.”
The pan crashed into the sink.
The water splashed.
Emily flinched.
Then Ethan walked in.
He was not supposed to be home yet.
The project had ended early because the client signed faster than expected.
Ethan had decided to surprise his wife.
He stopped at a bakery on the way home and bought the lemon cake Emily had been craving all week.
The cake was still in his car.
He had walked into his own house smiling.
Then he heard his mother’s voice.
He had stood outside the kitchen for only seven seconds.
Seven seconds was enough.
Enough to hear Teresa.
Enough to see Emily shaking.
Enough to watch his sister filming his pregnant wife like pain was entertainment.
Now, standing in the kitchen with Emily in his arms, Ethan understood something that made shame burn through his chest.
This had not started today.
Today was just the first time he had seen it.
“Get her bag,” he said.
No one moved.
Ethan looked at his youngest sister.
“Now.”
She flinched and went upstairs.
Teresa recovered first.
“Ethan, don’t be ridiculous. She is manipulating you.”
Ethan looked at her.
“My wife is having pain and you’re talking about manipulation?”
“She has been lying around for days.”
Emily whispered, “I tried to clean.”
Ethan held her closer.
May you like
“You don’t have to explain.”
👉 But when Teresa tried to blame Emily again, Ethan finally said the words his family never expected…
