Chapter 8 - The Story Patricia Invented
Patricia’s defense began before the trial.
Her attorney described Lily as an excitable child who threw a tantrum over a piece of jewelry.
He claimed Patricia tried to calm her.
He said Lily pulled away, tripped, and struck the bedpost.
The locked door was called a misunderstanding.
The old recording device was described as unreliable.
The attorney suggested I manipulated Madison’s account because I resented my parents’ wealth.
Then Patricia released a statement.
She said she loved both granddaughters equally.
The video from the party contradicted her.
Several guests had recorded her words.
“Only my real granddaughter matters.”
She claimed the sentence was taken out of context.
There was no context that could save it.
Still, the attacks affected Lily.
A parent at her school repeated something from television.
Lily came home asking whether she had caused Grandma to go to jail.
I knelt in front of her.
“Grandma is facing consequences because of choices Grandma made.”
“But I opened the box.”
“You are allowed to open your birthday present.”
“I held the bracelet.”
“You are allowed to hold something given to you.”
“I didn’t let go.”
I touched her uninjured cheek.
“Adults are responsible for keeping children safe, even when children are upset.”
She began to cry.
“I wanted Aunt Evelyn to be real.”
“She was real.”
“Was she nice?”
“She was brave.”
Lily looked at her stuffed rabbit.
“Like you?”
I shook my head.
“Braver.”
To protect Lily, the judge allowed her testimony to be recorded privately.
A child specialist asked gentle questions.
Lily explained the bracelet.
Patricia’s anger.
Robert locking the door.
She remembered David saying, “Mom, stop.”
She remembered falling.
Then she revealed something not captured clearly on the recorder.
After she hit the bedpost, she opened her eyes briefly.
Robert was kneeling beside her.
He removed something from his pocket.
A small metal object.
“What did it look like?” the specialist asked.
“A silver pen.”
“Did he use it?”
Lily nodded.
“He touched my hair with it.”
The object in Robert’s pocket at the bottom of the stairs had not been only the room key.
It was a small metal injection device disguised as a pen.
Investigators searched the pocket contents collected at the party.
The device contained residue from a sedative.
Robert had attempted to inject Lily.
He missed her skin because the glitter barrette blocked the needle.
The barrette had a tiny puncture mark.
That was why it lay across the room.
Robert had not merely locked Lily inside.
