Chapter 3 - SOPHIE

Sophie Lane was nine and had been placed with Jason through an emergency foster order.
Officially, she ran away.
Lily said Sophie refused to pretend she was another child, so Jason locked her in the kennel. One night, a woman took her through the back gate while Emily listened from inside.
The foster order came from Judge Margaret Shaw—the same judge overseeing my temporary custody review after my wife’s death.
Mrs. Harris provided porch-camera footage showing several cars entering Jason’s yard.
One belonged to the county child-services director.
Another belonged to my estranged brother, Daniel Carter, who had once challenged Emily’s inheritance.
Then police recovered Sophie’s hospital bracelet from Jason’s office.
She had been admitted under the name Emily Carter.
The false medical history was meant to make me look negligent.
