Chapter 11 - Blood in My Trunk

My car had been parked at the hospital since I followed Nancy’s ambulance there.

Security cameras showed no one approaching it.

At least, the cameras available to investigators showed no one.

A seventeen-minute section had been replaced with a repeating loop.

During that missing interval, someone opened my trunk, placed Colonel Harper inside, and left without triggering the alarm.

Her wrists were bound with military-grade restraint straps issued to my unit.

A single bullet wound marked her upper chest.

Ballistics later connected the bullet to Harper’s own service pistol—the weapon found in the sealed archive room.

On the surface, every detail pointed toward me.

Then the medical examiner noticed something impossible.

Harper had been dead for nearly twelve hours.

I had spoken to someone using her voice less than three hours earlier.

The call about my compromised credentials had come after her estimated time of death.

Someone had used artificial voice technology or a carefully prepared recording to impersonate her.

That discovery did not clear me, but it proved the operation had been planned long before Ryan lifted the bat.

Agent Warren returned my military jacket but kept my devices. I remained under investigation and was ordered not to leave Maryland.

Sergeant Hall met me outside the federal office.

“They released Ryan,” she said.

I stopped walking.

“Why?”

“The prosecutor says Nancy is missing, the camera footage is unavailable, and Ryan claims the chemicals belonged to you. They’re holding the assault report open, but his attorney argued he acted in self-defense.”

“He admitted following instructions.”

“During an interview without his attorney present after he requested counsel.”

The statement might be excluded.

Ryan had known exactly when to speak and when to object.

“Where is he?”

“His lawyer took him to a hotel.”

“Who is the lawyer?”

Hall handed me a business card.

Elizabeth Shaw.

Beth.

My cousin was representing my husband.

The betrayal landed without drama. No scream. No tears. Just a heavy stillness that settled through my body.

Beth had helped Ryan leave custody, removed Nancy from the hospital, and vanished in the same ambulance.

Yet something did not fit.

If Beth worked willingly for Belmont, why stage her own kidnapping? Why send the flash drive containing records that exposed the organization, even if those files framed me?

“She wanted us to find the drive,” I said.

Hall nodded.

“Maybe it was only meant to incriminate you.”

“Then why include the list of other victims?”

“Insurance.”

“Or a warning.”

We went to Beth’s office. The receptionist had already left, but Hall had a warrant related to Nancy’s disappearance.

The estate folder was gone. Beth’s computer had been wiped. Her desk drawers contained nothing unusual until I noticed one floorboard beneath the filing cabinet sat higher than the rest.

Under it was a small voice recorder.

The battery was dead.

We charged it and found eleven audio files. Ten contained ordinary client meetings.

The final recording was dated the day before the attack.

Beth’s voice spoke first.

“Ryan doesn’t understand what Belmont does to people after they complete an assignment.”

A man answered.

Logan Pierce.

“He understands enough.”

“You promised Nancy would survive.”

“That depends on Kelsey.”

“What do you want from her?”

“Access.”

“To what?”

“The Black Ledger.”

Beth’s breathing became audible.

“That file doesn’t exist.”

Pierce laughed.

“Her father died protecting it.”

My father had been a military procurement auditor before his death in a supposed boating accident.

The recording continued.

Beth whispered, “Kelsey doesn’t know.”

“No,” Pierce said. “But Nancy does.”

A door creaked in the background. Beth abruptly changed her tone.

“Ryan, you’re early.”

Then Ryan’s voice entered the recording.

“You two said my wife would take the blame.”

A sharp sound followed, as though someone had struck the desk.

Pierce spoke one final sentence before the file ended.
