Chapter 15 - The Recording Samuel Would Not Play

I remained inside the maintenance duct.

“You have my recorder,” I said into the phone.

Samuel looked down at the device in his hand.

“Yes.”

“How?”

“Megan recovered your handbag. I recovered what mattered.”

Megan’s face hardened beside me.

“That’s a lie,” she whispered.

Samuel heard her.

“Megan has lied to you since your wedding day.”

“Then play the recording,” I said.

“I will when you come outside.”

“Play it now.”

A pause.

“That would be unwise.”

“Why?”

“Because the recording contains information that could destroy your mother’s reputation.”

He knew exactly where to press.

Julian had used my guilt.

Eleanor used my marriage.

Samuel used my mother.

The people around me kept choosing different locks for the same cage.

I shifted closer to the grate.

Rachel stood beside the SUV, scanning the loading dock. Her hands were empty, but her posture was tense.

“Why are you with Samuel?” I asked her.

“Because he got me released.”

“How?”

“He proved the death record was fraudulent.”

“In less than an hour?”

She looked away.

Megan whispered, “Ask Samuel where the blue ledger came from.”

I did.

Samuel’s expression changed slightly.

“Your grandmother gave it to me.”

“When?”

“Before she died.”

“Why didn’t you show me then?”

“She believed you weren’t ready.”

“For what?”

“To understand that your mother helped create the system Julian is using against you.”

The words struck harder than they should have.

Megan touched my arm.

“He wants you emotional.”

I forced myself to breathe.

“What did my mother create?”

Samuel lifted the recorder.

“Come outside.”

“No.”

Movement appeared near the far end of the loading dock.

Julian stepped from behind a concrete pillar.

Eleanor followed, wearing a dark coat over her cream blouse. Robert Hale walked beside them in full uniform.

Four sides of the same structure.

Samuel did not look surprised.

Rachel did.

She moved away from the SUV.

“You said they weren’t coming,” she told Samuel.

“They weren’t supposed to.”

Robert raised one hand.

“Clara, the building is surrounded.”

Detective Chen took out her weapon.

“There are no clear shots from here,” she whispered.

Megan checked the ledger page she had kept.

“Oh, God.”

“What?”

She turned it toward me.

At the top was a list of initials and payment percentages.

J.V.

E.V.

R.H.

S.R.

Samuel Reed.

His initials carried the largest percentage.

I looked through the grate.

Samuel seemed older suddenly, not because his face changed but because the mask I had placed over it finally disappeared.

“You’re in the ledger,” I said.

He closed his eyes.

“So was your grandmother.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

“No,” he said. “It’s the beginning of one.”

Julian moved closer to him.

“Give me the recorder.”

Samuel held it away.

“You already failed.”

“I can still fix this.”

Eleanor’s voice cracked. “Robert, do something.”

Robert looked toward the duct.

He knew exactly where we were.

“Clara,” he called, “Samuel has been lying to all of us.”

Samuel laughed once, bitterly.

“That may be the first honest sentence you’ve spoken in eleven years.”

Rachel backed toward the SUV.

Megan gripped my wrist.

“She’s leaving.”

Rachel reached the driver’s door.

Before she could open it, the SUV’s headlights switched on by themselves.

The recorder in Samuel’s hand emitted a sharp tone.

Its tiny indicator changed from red to blue.

A transmission had begun.

Not playback.

Broadcast.

Every phone on the loading dock vibrated at once.

Mine displayed an incoming live audio stream labeled MARIANNE HALE — LAST STATEMENT.

My mother’s name.

Samuel stared at the recorder in horror.

“I didn’t activate that.”

A woman’s voice came through my phone.

My mother’s voice.

Older in my memory, but unmistakable.

“If Clara is hearing this, then Samuel has chosen the Vale family over his own daughter.”

Samuel’s knees nearly gave way.

His daughter.

Megan made a small sound beside me.

I turned toward her.

Tears had filled her eyes.

“No,” she whispered. “That isn’t possible.”

The recording continued.

“Clara must never be told that Megan Reed is her sister until—”

The audio cut out.

A gunshot cracked across the loading dock.

Samuel dropped the recorder.

The device slid beneath the SUV.

Every light in the basement went dark.
