Chapter 14 - Lenora Flooded the Corridor with Gas

The first white vapor curled from the ceiling vents.
The medic had warned Emma about sedatives in her system.
One deeper dose could stop her breathing.
Margaret pulled her coat over Emma’s mouth.
The security man tested the metal door.
“Sealed.”
The evidence specialist pointed toward Room Nine.
“Air return inside the bedroom.”
They ran back.
He ripped the camera from behind the mirror and used its cable to jam the vent flap. The security man shoved the desk beneath the doorway while Margaret and Emma sealed gaps with clothing from the closet.
The gas thickened outside.
Inside Room Nine, the air remained clearer.
Margaret called the team above.
No signal.
The underground walls blocked transmission.
A small red light blinked beneath the stuffed rabbit.
Emma opened its torn seam.
Inside was an old handheld radio.
She turned it on.
Static.
Then Claire’s voice.
“Emma?”
“I’m here.”
“Elias says there’s a shared ventilation shaft behind the closet.”
The security man pulled the clothes aside.
A narrow panel appeared.
“Can it fit a person?” Emma asked.
“Barely.”
“What’s on your side?”
“Medical storage. Elias can’t crawl.”
Emma looked at Margaret.
“We have to open the main door.”
Claire’s breathing crackled through the radio.
“Marianne has override control. Lenora has the physical key.”
Margaret understood Daniel’s disappearance.
“He went after Lenora.”
The radio caught another voice.
Elias.
“Daniel knows the release sequence.”
“Can we trust him?” Emma asked.
Elias coughed.
“No.”
The honesty almost sounded like humor.
The evidence specialist worked on the panel.
The gas alarm outside stopped.
That did not mean the air was safe.
A monitor hidden beneath the desk activated.
Daniel appeared on the screen.
He stood in the kitchen above, blood on his temple, facing Lenora across the hidden hatch.
Victor lay unconscious near the table.
The security team was missing from view.
Lenora held the brass key.
Daniel held the red ledger.
“You always choose the book,” Lenora said.
“You always choose the exit.”
“Give it to me.”
“Release Room Nine.”
Lenora laughed.
“You think Margaret will forgive you?”
“No.”
“Then why help her?”
Daniel looked toward the exterior security camera.
“Because Emma deserves one parent who finally tells the truth.”
He opened the red ledger.
Lenora’s face changed.
Daniel read a sequence of numbers aloud.
The metal door outside Room Nine clicked once.
Claire heard it from the opposite side.
“That’s the first lock.”
Lenora lunged.
The video shook as she struck Daniel with the brass key clenched in her fist.
He fell against the counter.
The red ledger slid across the wet marble.
Victor stirred.
Lenora reached for the book.
Victor grabbed her ankle.
She kicked him in the face.
Emma watched without sympathy.
Victor had created the violence he now received.
Daniel pushed himself upright.
“Second sequence,” Margaret whispered.
He looked into the camera as if hearing her.
Then he shouted another number.
The door clicked again.
Claire pulled from the opposite side.
A narrow gap appeared.
Gas rushed toward her section.
“Close it!” Margaret shouted.
Too late.
The gap widened.
Claire appeared through the haze, one arm around Elias’s shoulders as he struggled beside the medical bed.
The security man and evidence specialist forced the door open enough to pull them through.
Marianne was behind them.
She held a syringe against Claire’s neck.
“Back away.”
Everyone stopped.
Marianne’s face looked even more like Margaret’s in person.
But where Margaret’s anger had become disciplined, Marianne’s had curdled into entitlement.
“You took my life,” she told Margaret.
“Our father did.”
“You accepted it.”
“I was a child.”
“You became everything he denied me.”
“And now you punish our daughters?”
Marianne’s eyes flicked toward Emma.
“Only one is mine.”
Claire’s face tightened.
“I’m not yours.”
The words struck Marianne harder than any blow.
She pressed the syringe closer.
Elias reached from the bed and caught her sleeve.
She jerked away.
The needle scratched Claire’s neck but did not inject fully.
Emma moved.
She struck Marianne’s wrist with both hands, redirecting the syringe toward the wall. Margaret pulled Claire back while the security man controlled Marianne’s arm.
The syringe fell.
Marianne fought with unexpected strength, twisting and kicking, but the security man used her momentum to turn her against the wall.
Elias collapsed across the bed, struggling to breathe.
The gas thinned as the evidence specialist forced open a maintenance vent.
Emma knelt beside Claire.
They stared at each other.
Two women shaped by the same conspiracy from opposite sides.
Above them, the monitor showed Lenora picking up the red ledger.
She moved toward the front door.
Then the door opened.
A line of people stood outside, their faces hidden by the camera angle.
Lenora stopped.
Someone stepped forward.
Margaret could see only polished black shoes and the bottom of a dark coat.
A man’s voice said, “You were supposed to burn the house before Margaret arrived.”
Lenora whispered, “Charles?”
