Chapter 12 - THE BLUE BOX

Vanessa surrendered the box through counsel.

No private meeting.

No bargain.

Daniel and I opened it with documentation.

Inside were exactly what Claire described.

Old bank records.

Lucy’s letters.

A flash drive.

The original repayment agreement.

And the yellow envelope.

My heart stopped.

Aaron had described it perfectly.

Faded yellow paper.

Sealed once.

Now opened.

Inside was Lucy’s signed beneficiary-change form.

Witnessed by Aaron Pike.

New beneficiary:

Harbor House Women’s Shelter.

The form had been missing for seventeen years.

“How did Claire get this?” I asked.

Daniel did not answer.

We examined the envelope.

A note in Claire’s handwriting was attached.

Found in Vanessa’s apartment, October 2009.

My stomach dropped.

Claire had stolen it from Vanessa?

The next document explained.

Six weeks after Lucy died, Claire went to Vanessa’s apartment to retrieve belongings.

According to Claire’s handwritten account, she found the envelope in a desk drawer.

She confronted Vanessa.

Vanessa claimed Lucy gave it to her voluntarily and changed her mind.

Claire did not believe her.

“Why didn't Claire give this to police?”

That question hurt.

Another page.

I was afraid they would ask why I entered Vanessa’s apartment and took it. I was afraid they would blame me for hiding evidence too. I kept waiting until I could prove more. Then waiting became its own crime.

Claire’s guilt was real.

Not guilt for causing Lucy’s death.

Guilt for withholding evidence.

She spent seventeen years trapped by the consequences of one cowardly choice.

I understood that pattern too well.

Then we played the flash drive.

Audio.

A conversation between Claire and Vanessa.

Date: 2019.

Vanessa:

“Give me the form.”

Claire:

“No.”

Vanessa:

“It belongs to me.”

Claire:

“It belonged to Lucy.”

Vanessa:

“She was drunk and confused.”

Claire:

“She signed it.”

Then Vanessa said:

“You still don't know what happened that night.”

Claire:

“Then tell me.”

Long silence.

Vanessa:

“She fell.”

Claire:

“Did you touch her?”

Another silence.

Vanessa:

“I tried to stop her from leaving.”

My breathing stopped.

Claire asked:

“How?”

Vanessa:

“I grabbed her arm.”

Claire:

“And?”

“I don't remember.”

Claire:

“You remember everything.”

Vanessa:

“She pulled away.”

Then the recording ended.

Not confession to pushing Lucy.

But admission of physical contact immediately before the fall.

A major historical question partially resolved.

Vanessa had lied for years when she said she never touched Lucy.

That could explain the missing form.

The insurance claim.

Her fear.

But seventeen years later, determining legal responsibility for Lucy’s death would require authorities reviewing surviving evidence.

I would not invent a verdict.

Then Daniel found the final item.

A recent note from Claire.

Vanessa came to the mansion today. She says she wants the yellow envelope or she will tell Richard I caused Lucy’s death. I told her no.

Date:

Seven weeks before Claire died.

Vanessa had been inside my home while Claire was alive.

The next line changed everything.
