Chapter 9 - THE BACKUP DRIVE

Claire made backups.

I smiled when Daniel said it.

Not because any of this was funny.

Because that was Claire.

She duplicated tax receipts.

Photographed passports.

Kept spare keys in labeled envelopes.

Of course she would not place seventeen years of fear inside one blue box.

The storage unit contained a small hard drive wrapped inside an old sweater.

Password protected.

The clue was written on a photograph of Sophie as a newborn:

LUCY’S FAVORITE SONG + OUR WEDDING YEAR.

Emily knew the song.

I knew the year.

The drive opened.

Folders appeared.

LUCY.

VANESSA.

LEGAL.

FOR RICHARD.

I clicked the last one.

Claire appeared on video.

Alive.

Healthy.

Sitting in the locked room.

My breath disappeared.

“Richard, if you're watching this, I probably failed to tell you something while I still had the chance.”

I covered my mouth.

Claire continued.

She told me about Lucy.

Vanessa.

The insurance.

Her incomplete police statement.

Her guilt.

Then:

“I do not know whether Vanessa caused Lucy’s fall.”

That mattered enormously.

Claire refused to manufacture certainty.

“But I know she has used my guilt to control me since college.”

Vanessa contacted Claire periodically over seventeen years.

Requests for money.

Then silence.

Then threats.

Claire paid her twice.

$20,000 in 2012.

$35,000 in 2017.

I never knew.

“What did Vanessa threaten?”

Claire answered on the video.

“To tell you I killed Lucy.”

My wife believed that accusation could destroy our marriage.

I wanted to reach through the screen.

Tell her she should have trusted me.

Then Claire said:

“Vanessa recently contacted me again. This time she asked about Sophie.”

My blood went cold.

“She wanted to know whether Sophie inherited separately from me.”

Claire had created a trust funded by assets from her family.

Sophie was beneficiary.

Rough value: $3.2 million.

I knew the trust existed.

Vanessa apparently did too.

Claire said:

“She told me Lucy’s money should have been hers, and that I built my life using blood money I helped deny her.”

That accusation made no sense financially.

Claire never received Lucy’s estate.

But obsession did not require accounting.

Then Claire looked directly into the camera.

“If Vanessa approaches our family after I'm gone, please do not assume money is the only thing she wants. She wants me to admit I caused Lucy’s death.”

There.

The central emotional motive.

Vanessa wanted vindication.

Claire refused to confess to something she did not believe she had done.

Then the video glitched.

The final three minutes were corrupted.

Daniel tried another file.

Same problem.

Someone had tampered with the drive?

Maybe age.

Maybe damage.

We did not know.

But the last readable frame showed Claire holding something up.

A photograph.

Three women on a fire escape.

Lucy.

Claire.

Vanessa.

And behind them, reflected in a dark window, was a fourth person.

A man.

We had never heard about him.

📖 Claire’s recording exposed Vanessa’s blackmail, but a forgotten fourth witness could finally tell us what happened on the fire escape seventeen years earlier. 👇
