Chapter 13 - THE RECORDING CLAIRE DELETED

The midpoint explosion came from a file Claire had tried to erase.
Her external drive contained deleted audio fragments recoverable by forensic specialists.
Most were meaningless.
Half-recorded notes.
Static.
A grocery list.
Then one file dated the day Claire died opened with Corinne’s voice.
“You think Ryan will choose you over me forever?”
I stopped breathing.
Claire answered.
“This isn’t about Ryan.”
“It’s always about Ryan.”
“No. This is about Maisie and the money you stole.”
Silence.
Then Corinne laughed.
“You’re sick, Claire.”
“I’m clear enough to know what you did.”
The recording shifted as though Claire moved the phone.
Corinne’s voice became sharper.
“If you show him those records, you will lose everything before I do.”
“How?”
“Because he already thinks you’re fragile.”
I shut my eyes.
I had never thought that.
But I had worried about Claire.
Corinne had apparently interpreted concern as leverage.
Claire said, “Get out.”
Then came the sentence that rewrote everything before it.
Corinne replied, “You don’t understand. He was supposed to be mine before you ever came back.”
I looked at Elena.
“Came back?”
Claire and I had separated briefly three years before Maisie was born.
Three months.
Almost nobody knew the details.
Corinne did.
She had been Claire’s friend.
And apparently mine.
Not romantically.
At least not from my side.
The recording continued.
Claire accused Corinne of using their friendship to get close to our family.
Corinne said nothing for several seconds.
Then:
“If you hadn’t come back to him, none of this would be necessary.”
The file ended.
Not with a fall.
Not with a confession.
With motive wider than money.
Jealousy.
Entitlement.
Years of resentment.
Everything from Chapter 1 through now shifted.
Corinne had not simply seen an opportunity after Claire died.
She had wanted Claire’s life before Claire was gone.
That did not mean she killed her.
But it changed how we interpreted every later choice.
The recording was authenticated as originating from Claire’s phone backup.
Corinne’s lawyers challenged completeness.
Fair.
A deleted fragment can omit context.
But the voices were real.
The timing was real.
The content matched the financial evidence.
That evening my father came over.
When I played the recording, he covered his mouth.
“Did you know Corinne wanted me?”
He shook his head.
Then stopped.
“What?”
His expression changed.
“Years ago, during your separation from Claire, Corinne asked me whether you were dating.”
My stomach dropped.
“What did you tell her?”
“That you were miserable and still loved Claire.”
I stood.
Corinne had known.
And still stayed close.
Maisie woke upstairs and began crying.
I climbed the stairs.
When I lifted her from the crib, she reached for my face.
“Mommy?”
I looked at Claire’s rabbit.
“No, baby.”
The answer hurt.
But the larger truth hurt more.
Corinne had spent years wanting a family that already belonged to someone else.

And when Claire came back, Corinne apparently decided waiting was not enough.
📖 Claire’s deleted recording revealed Corinne’s obsession existed years before the theft, forcing me to reconsider whether money was the motive—or merely the tool she used after jealousy hardened. 👇
