Chapter 22 - CORINNE’S PLEA

Corinne offered to plead guilty to fraud.
Not manslaughter.
Not evidence tampering around Claire.
She wanted the financial crimes separated from the death.
Dana refused.
Then Corinne offered evidence tampering.
Still no death admission.
Dana refused again.
The negotiation lasted two weeks.
Meanwhile, Nathan accepted responsibility for his role in the foundation fraud and record deletion. His cooperation reduced his exposure but did not erase it.
The foundation recovered substantial assets.
Not all.
Insurance covered some losses.
Corinne’s accounts supplied restitution funds where law allowed.
The money stopped being mysterious.
It became accounting.
Good.
Mysteries are exhausting.
Maisie cared about none of it.
She cared that breakfast bananas be cut into circles.
She cared that I stay in the room during bath time.
She cared that the bicycle bell worked.
Life kept insisting on being ordinary.
Then Corinne requested a meeting with me through counsel.
No private room.
Dana’s office.
Lawyers present.
Recorded.
She looked thinner.
Not transformed.
Not suddenly moral.
Just exhausted.
“I loved you,” she said.
I said nothing.
“I loved Maisie.”
My jaw tightened.
“You grabbed her by the hair.”
Tears filled her eyes.
“I panicked.”
“Because of the key.”
“Yes.”
First admission.
Clear.
She looked down.
“I knew Claire put it in the rabbit. I searched once after she died. I couldn’t find it.”
“Why did you want it?”
“You know.”
“I want you to say it.”
Her lawyer whispered something.
Corinne ignored him.
“Because the garden room had proof.”
“Of the money?”
“Yes.”
“And Claire?”
Corinne’s eyes closed.
That was the wall.
Not the garden door.
This one.
She finally spoke.
“She wouldn’t give me the key.”
“What happened on the steps?”
“She tried to walk away.”
“And?”
“I grabbed her wrist.”
My body went still.
“She turned. She pulled away.”
“And?”
Corinne started crying.
“I grabbed the scarf.”
There it was.
“She slipped?”
Corinne shook her head.
“I don’t know. I pulled. She pulled. Then she was gone.”
Not a deliberate shove.
Not innocence.
Physical aggression during a struggle.
“What did you do?”
“I froze.”
“For twenty minutes?”
“No.”
Her face crumpled.
“I called Nathan. I took the folder. I tried to delete things. I thought if she lived, she’d destroy me.”
“If she lived?”
Corinne looked at me.
The horror of her own wording seemed to reach her.
“I knew she was breathing.”
The room was silent.
Dana asked the final question.
“Why did you wait to call 911?”
Corinne whispered:
“Because I chose myself.”
That was the truth.
Not elegant.
Not redeeming.
May you like
Complete.
📖 Corinne finally admitted grabbing Claire before the fatal fall and delaying help to protect herself, leaving only one question: whether she would repeat that truth when consequences became real. 👇
