Chapter 15 - WHAT MY FATHER WANTED TO BURY

My father didn’t deny meeting me privately because he cared about discretion. He admitted it before I sat down.
“What do you want?” I asked.
He looked old for the first time in my life.
“To stop this from destroying everything.”
There it was. Not to protect Lily. Not to protect Noah. Everything.
He had already heard enough from the board’s preliminary auditors to know Grant’s cash problems weren’t hypothetical. A series of disguised internal borrowings, vendor manipulation, and timing fraud had created a gap large enough that outside scrutiny could tank a pending acquisition and crater confidence in Sterling Family Holdings.
“And you thought you could manage Grant quietly,” I said.
“I thought I could remove him after the quarter closed.”
“While he used my children as leverage.”
A flicker of real shame crossed his face. “I didn’t know that part.”
Then he made me an offer that nearly ended something between us forever.
He would support a private settlement. Vanessa would be paid to disappear. Grant would resign for “health reasons.” The company would repair the financial hole internally. The children would be protected without scandal.
He thought he was offering pragmatism. All I heard was burial.
“No,” I said.
“Adrian—”
“No. My daughter was dragged by her hair. My son was put in a kennel. A witness was hit by a car. You don’t get to buy that quiet.”
The silence that followed felt like a bone breaking.
When I stood to leave, my father said, “If you take this public, you may lose the company.”
I turned back. “Then I lose the company.”
That answer cost me more than business. It cost me the last illusion that our family name was built on values instead of varnish.
Back at the estate, Maya handed me a folded note. “This was pushed under the guest cottage door before security found it.”
The handwriting was Vanessa’s.
Lily,
Tell your dad the truth about what you did with Noah, and this can still be easy.

I had to grip the edge of the table.
Even now, with everything closing in, Vanessa was still trying to move blame onto a child.
I took the note upstairs to Elena. She immediately added witness tampering to the growing list of issues we were documenting.
That night, Lily asked if she had to speak in court. I told her I would do everything in my power to keep that from happening. Then she said the sentence I will probably hear in my sleep for the rest of my life.
“She told me if Noah got hurt, it would be because I wasn’t good enough to keep him safe.”
I held her until she stopped shaking.
The next morning, Elena’s forensic accountant called.

Vanessa had received monthly payments from one of Grant’s shell entities for five months—starting the same week she asked me detailed questions about Claire’s trust protections.
📖 My father wanted the scandal buried, but Vanessa’s note and the shell payments proved the cruelty toward Lily was part of a paid, sustained betrayal—not a single monstrous afternoon. 👇
