Chapter 24 - THE NIGHT OF THE BREAK-IN

Grant disappearing should have meant distance.
Instead it brought him closer.
The hearing was less than twenty hours away when the power to the rear security line cut out just after midnight. Backup systems engaged immediately, but only for interior zones. By the time the alert reached my phone, I was already out of bed.
I heard the glass break from the downstairs study.
Maya was in the family suite with Lily and Noah. Security was sweeping from the east wing. I took the hall stairs two at a time and found the study window shattered inward, papers flying in the air from the draft.
And Grant there.
Not memory. Not footage. My brother in the flesh, half-crouched beside the desk safe with Vanessa two feet behind him, face wild and pale.
For one impossible second we all froze.
Then Grant grabbed the evidence pouch case from the lower cabinet and ran for the hall. I hit him hard enough to knock him into the doorframe. The case fell. Vanessa screamed. He swung at me, not polished now, not strategic—desperate and ugly.
“Move!” he shouted to Vanessa.
She lunged for the case. I kicked it under the desk. Grant shoved me into the bookshelf and bolted toward the stairs. Security crashed in from the foyer just as Maya shouted from above that Lily was awake and panicking.
I made the choice in a heartbeat.
Children first.
I left the guards on Grant and ran upstairs. Lily was standing outside the family suite clutching Noah, both of them crying. The sound of broken glass had ripped the old terror wide open. I got Noah into Maya’s arms and pulled Lily against my chest while security radio chatter echoed through the hallway below.
Grant escaped through the kitchen terrace door.
Vanessa didn’t.
By the time I got downstairs again, she was on the floor in the foyer, wrists zip-tied by estate security, mascara streaking down her face. The study looked like a storm had targeted paper.
The fireproof evidence case was still there—but the duplicate hard drive had been cracked in the struggle.
For a second I thought the air had left the room.
Elena arrived within fifteen minutes, assessed the damage, and forced us back into structure. We still had exported forensic copies from the mirror drive in protected storage. The physical damage mattered less than my shock wanted it to. What mattered more was intent: Grant had broken into the estate on the eve of hearing to seize or destroy evidence.
As police documented the scene, Lily came to the top of the stairs in one of my T-shirts.
“Daddy,” she called softly.
I went to her.
“There was another camera,” she said through tears. “In Noah’s room. The little one. You saved it.”
I kissed her forehead. “Yes. We saved it.”
For the first time since the backyard, I saw her realize that truth had outlived the people trying to kill it.
At dawn, with Vanessa in custody and Grant missing, Elena set the final hearing binders on my kitchen island.

“Today,” she said, “we stop surviving this and start ending it.”
📖 Grant broke into my house to destroy the truth, but Lily’s reminder about the saved footage turned our worst night into the proof that desperation had finally exposed him. 👇
