Chapter 1 - THE HAND IN THE VENT

The wooden broom cracked across Ethan’s shoulder before I had both feet inside my kitchen.

My seven-year-old son recoiled beside the low metal vent, bread flying from his fingers and skittering across the marble floor. Vanessa stood over him with both hands around the broom, her cream blouse glowing in the late-afternoon sunlight as if cruelty had somehow dressed itself for dinner.

“STAY AWAY FROM THAT WALL!”

Ethan clutched his shoulder.

Then, instead of backing away, he scrambled for the fallen bread.

Vanessa jammed the broom between him and the vent.

“She’s hungry!” Ethan cried.

Vanessa’s face changed.

Not anger. Fear.

She grabbed his arm.

I dropped my briefcase so hard the brass clasp cracked against the marble.

“Vanessa!”

She whipped around.

I crossed the kitchen in three strides, tore her hand from Ethan, pulled him behind me, and ripped the broom away.

“Who is he feeding?”

For the first time in six years of knowing Vanessa, I watched her become completely still.

Her eyes flicked toward the wall.

That was enough.

I turned.

The vent sat beneath a row of elegant cabinets, too large for an ordinary HVAC return and old enough to belong to the original mansion. I had seen it every day for years without thinking about it.

Vanessa stepped in front of me.

“Ryan—don’t.”

She spread both arms across the wall.

My pulse went cold.

Behind me, Ethan made no sound. When I looked back, tears streaked his face. He raised one trembling finger and pointed around Vanessa.

At the vent.

I moved her aside.

She grabbed my sleeve. “You don’t understand.”

“Then move.”

I crouched several feet from the metal slats.

Behind them was absolute darkness.

At first, I heard only Ethan breathing.

Then came a tiny sound.

A sob.

Not through a speaker.

Not from another room.

From inside my wall.

My body locked.

“Hello?” I said.

Vanessa whispered my name behind me.

I ignored her.

“Can you hear me?”

Another sob.

Ethan knelt several feet behind my shoulder.

“I’ve been giving her bread,” he whispered. “Mom said I wasn’t supposed to know.”

Mom.

The word hit me almost as hard as the broom had hit him.

I looked toward the vent again.

Nothing moved.

Then two small fingers appeared between the metal slats.

A child’s hand slowly pushed through the darkness.

The fingers were thin and trembling.

They reached toward me.

Vanessa made a strangled sound.

I leaned forward instinctively.

The hand opened.

A weak little voice came from behind the wall.

“Daddy… help me.”

Every thought in my head disappeared.

I stared at that tiny hand.

Then I looked over my shoulder at my wife.

Vanessa had gone deathly pale.

“Who is that?” I asked.

She shook her head.

“Who is calling me Daddy?”

“I can explain.”

I stood.

“No. You can tell me where the entrance is.”

Ethan grabbed the back of my jacket.

“Daddy,” he whispered. “She said there’s another door.”

Vanessa’s gaze snapped toward him.

That reaction told me Ethan knew something she desperately needed him not to say.

And suddenly the child behind my wall was no longer the only person I needed to rescue from my wife.

📖 I thought the impossible question was who the hidden girl was, but Ethan’s secret about another door meant Vanessa had built this nightmare deliberately. 👇
