Chapter 10 - THE GREEN BACKPACK

The green backpack appeared in a storage locker rented under Vanessa’s maiden name.

Not because investigators got lucky.

Because Ethan remembered a luggage tag.

During his forensic interview, he described seeing Vanessa carry Sophie’s backpack through the garage and place it in the trunk of her car. He remembered a red plastic tag hanging from Vanessa’s key ring because he had made it for her at school.

Police reviewed garage-entry footage.

Vanessa’s Mercedes left the estate that first night and stopped at a self-storage facility twelve miles away.

With proper authority in place, investigators opened the unit.

The backpack sat inside a plastic storage bin beneath two winter coats.

Sophie’s clothes were still inside.

So were three prescription bottles, an inhaler, photographs, Emma’s death certificate copy, and a sealed white envelope with my name handwritten across the front.

Ryan Carter.

My hands shook when Elena showed me the evidence photograph.

The original letter had to remain in custody until documentation was complete, but I was permitted a forensic copy.

Emma had written it six weeks before she died.

Ryan,

If Sophie is reading this with you, then I am gone, and somehow the truth finally reached the person it was meant for.

I stopped.

Started again.

Emma explained that she tried to contact me during pregnancy. Vanessa responded first, saying she was “handling communication for Ryan.” Later came the emails under my name.

Emma admitted she believed them because they were cruel in a way that matched how suddenly communication with me had ended.

Then came a detail that changed everything.

Vanessa met Emma in person.

Twice.

The first meeting occurred before Vanessa and I were engaged.

The second happened after Ethan was born.

My son had already existed when Vanessa went back to the woman raising my unknown daughter.

Emma wrote:

She told me you had a new family now and that contacting you would destroy your son’s home. She offered money. I refused.

I read that sentence four times.

Vanessa had used Ethan before he could speak.

Not as a victim then.

As leverage.

The letter included dates, a café location, and the name of a lawyer Vanessa falsely claimed represented me.

Elena recognized the name.

“He never represented you.”

“Can he confirm that?”

“He can confirm whatever actually happened.”

By afternoon, he did.

Attorney Samuel Pike remembered Vanessa requesting a consultation years earlier regarding “unwanted paternity contact involving her fiancé.” He refused involvement after learning she was not authorized to act for me.

His billing archive still existed.

Another piece.

Sophie listened while I explained the letter in Margaret’s living room.

“Mom knew you didn’t send those messages?”

“Not until near the end. She had started questioning them.”

Sophie pressed her lips together.

“She died thinking maybe she was wrong about you.”

The word maybe hurt.

But it was more than we had yesterday.

Then Sophie reached into the evidence-property inventory copy.

“My necklace isn’t listed.”

“What necklace?”

“A silver heart Mom gave me. It has two pictures inside.”

One of Emma.

One of me.

The necklace had been in the backpack when Sophie arrived.

Now it was missing.

📖 The recovered backpack proved Vanessa met Emma twice and used Ethan as leverage years ago, but Sophie’s missing locket suggested Vanessa removed one deeply personal piece before hiding everything else. 👇
