Chapter 5 - The Woman We Were Told Was Gone

Aunt Vivian Carter had vanished from our family before I joined federal service.

My mother said Vivian moved overseas after a dispute over money.

Dad refused to discuss her.

Daniel and I learned not to ask.

Now her name sat at the center of a forged deed.

Officer Miller found her within an hour.

Vivian had never left the country.

She lived forty miles away under her married name, Vivian Cole.

Cole.

The name Dad heard.

She was connected to Coleson Capital through her late husband’s estate.

Daniel’s lender was not a stranger.

It was family.

Vivian arrived at the hospital before we could locate her formally.

She walked into the waiting area wearing a charcoal coat and carrying herself like a woman entering a meeting she had scheduled.

Seventy years old.

Silver hair.

My mother’s eyes.

“Rebecca,” she said.

I stood between her and Dad’s room.

“You don’t get to say my name like we know each other.”

Her expression barely changed.

“You were always direct.”

“You transferred my father’s home.”

“I protected a family asset.”

“By drugging him?”

Her eyes shifted.

Only once.

That was enough.

“I never approved violence.”

“But you approved coercion.”

She glanced toward Officer Miller.

“You have no proof.”

I held up my phone.

“We have recordings.”

For the first time, her composure cracked.

Not much.

A small tightening around the mouth.

“Recordings of Daniel and Priscilla.”

“And Ellis Crane.”

That name landed.

Vivian looked toward the elevator.

Calculating distance.

Miller stepped closer.

“You’re free to leave, Mrs. Cole. But your movement will be documented.”

She smiled faintly.

“You think a hospital hallway is an interrogation room?”

“No,” I said. “I think every room becomes one when someone starts lying.”

Vivian lowered her voice.

“Your father stole from your mother.”

I stared at her.

There it was.

The deeper motive.

She claimed my mother and Vivian inherited property from their parents. Dad allegedly persuaded my mother to sell, then placed the proceeds into the house where Daniel and I grew up.

Vivian believed part of the house belonged to her.

“Then you file a claim,” I said. “You don’t manufacture dementia.”

“I tried legal channels.”

“Using a dead neurologist?”

“That was Priscilla.”

The same pattern continued.

Everyone blamed the next person.

Vivian blamed Priscilla.

Priscilla blamed Daniel.

Daniel blamed fear.

But Dad’s bruises required hands.

His confinement required a lock.

His stolen medication required daily choices.

Miller received confirmation that Ellis Crane had left his office carrying boxes less than an hour earlier.

He was running.

Vivian’s phone vibrated.

She checked the message and quickly hid the screen.

I caught two words before it disappeared.

Crane failed.

“Who sent that?”

“No one.”

I stepped closer.

“You spent years away from us. Why come back now?”

Her face hardened.

“Because Harold was going to sell the house.”

“He couldn’t. It was entering a trust.”

Vivian froze.

She had not known about the final will.

That meant Priscilla had manipulated her too.

The conspiracy was not a clean hierarchy. It was a chain of selfish people feeding one another selective truths.

Then Dad’s nurse ran into the hallway.

“Ms. Carter, your father’s room alarm activated.”

I turned.

The officer outside his door was down on one knee, disoriented but conscious.

Dad’s bed was empty.

The window was locked.

The only exit was the service corridor.

On the pillow lay his hospital bracelet and a folded note.

Rebecca—

They know about the basement recording.

Don’t trust the person who brought you here.

I read the line twice.

Officer Miller had driven me from the house.

But he had not brought me to the hospital.

Daniel had called me that morning.

My brother was the reason I came.

I looked toward the interview room.

Daniel’s chair was empty.
