Chapter 1 - THE WOMAN ON THE DOORMAT

The front door swung open so hard that its brass handle struck the stopper with a sharp metallic crack.

Clara Voss saw her sister lying face down on the doormat.

For one suspended second, no one moved.

Elena’s dark hair covered half her face. One arm was trapped beneath her body. Her bare feet extended onto the cold stone porch, and the thin blue dress she wore had twisted around her knees.

Daniel Mercer stood over her in a charcoal suit, calm enough to be bored.

He dragged one polished dress shoe across Elena’s back as though wiping mud from the sole.

Behind him, a tall blonde woman in a cream silk blouse held Elena’s phone and watched with parted lips.

Daniel looked down at his wife.

“You should’ve stayed quiet.”

Clara’s handbag slipped from her shoulder.

She crossed the threshold before it hit the floor.

Her shoulder slammed into Daniel’s chest.

The impact drove the breath from him. His shoes lost traction on the marble, and he crashed backward into the foyer wall. A framed landscape rattled above his head.

The blonde woman gasped.

Elena’s eyelids fluttered.

Daniel pushed himself upright, stunned more by the insult than the pain.

She held it loosely between two fingers.

He grabbed for it.

Clara caught his wrist.

She did not jerk him forward or strike him. She rotated his arm just enough to stop his hand three inches from the envelope.

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

For the first time, uncertainty entered his eyes.

Clara released him.

“Try again.”

Silence spread through the foyer.

Elena watched from the floor, clutching Clara’s coat beneath her chin.

Daniel lowered his hand.

“What is this performance supposed to accomplish?”

Elena’s fingers slipped into the coat pocket.

Clara felt the movement but did not stop her.

Elena withdrew a small brass key.

The key was old, narrow, and marked by a faded strip of red enamel near the bow.

Daniel froze.

Not dramatically.

His shoulders simply stopped moving.

His gaze fixed on the key with the stillness of a man watching a weapon pointed at his heart.

Clara placed it on the console table.

Then she set the unopened envelope beside it.

Finally, she took out a phone.

It was not Elena’s phone.

The screen illuminated as she placed it faceup.

A notification appeared.

Daniel read it.

Madison could not see the words from where she stood, but she saw his reaction.

His lips parted.

His face drained of color.

“You found it?”

Clara looked at Elena.

Then at Daniel.

She slid the black envelope across the polished wood.

Daniel did not touch it.

Madison began edging toward the hallway.

Clara smiled for the first time.

“Open it,” she said softly. “If you dare.”

A sound came from the second floor.

Not a settling floorboard.

Not plumbing.

Three slow knocks echoed from behind the locked door of Daniel’s private study.

Elena lifted her head.

May you like

Daniel whispered, “That room is empty.”

Then the knocking came again.
