Chapter 14 - The Birthday Room

The name on the bracelet was mine.

Camille Vale.

Not Camille Bennett, the name I had carried before marrying Grant.

Detective Ortiz ordered a DNA comparison using my stored medical records, Harper’s hospital sample, and genetic material recovered from Richard’s old personal items held in evidence after his supposed death.

The laboratory needed hours.

We had less.

Vanessa’s phone last connected near the event center where Richard’s memorial service had been held two years earlier.

The building was owned by North Vale Holdings.

Ortiz assembled a team.

Nolan was ordered to remain behind because of his injured arm.

He ignored the order.

“I’m not law enforcement,” he said. “I’m going because Camille is going.”

“I didn’t ask you to,” I said.

“No. You were planning to go without telling anyone.”

He knew me too well for a man I had only trusted for one day.

The event center was dark except for a warm glow behind the ballroom doors.

Music played inside.

A child’s birthday song.

The same recording that had played when Harper entered my kitchen wearing her rainbow dress.

Ortiz pushed open the doors.

The ballroom had been decorated to match Harper’s party.

Silver balloons.

Pink streamers.

A unicorn cake.

At the center of the room, Vanessa sat tied to a chair.

Sabrina stood beside her.

Martin held a gun.

And Richard Vale sat at the head of a long table, looking older than in the parking-garage photograph but unmistakably alive.

He smiled when he saw me.

“You have your mother’s courage.”

“Which mother?”

His smile widened.

“That is the question, isn’t it?”

Ortiz ordered Martin to drop the gun.

He pressed it against Vanessa’s neck.

Richard remained seated.

“Detective, violence would damage records everyone here wants preserved.”

“What records?” I asked.

“Your birth.”

Sabrina’s face was bruised.

One sleeve of her white blouse was torn.

She looked at me with naked fear.

“Don’t believe him.”

Richard turned toward her.

“You have disappointed me for years.”

“I’m not your daughter.”

“No. You were something more useful.”

He gestured toward the table.

Two folders lay there.

One bore Sabrina’s name.

The other bore mine.

“Thirty-eight years ago,” Richard said, “Dr. Shaw worked in a private maternity ward. Children were transferred. Names were changed. Families paid for outcomes.”

My stomach turned.

“You bought babies?”

“I created legacies.”

“You destroyed lives.”

“Only careless people allow bloodlines to be determined by chance.”

Nolan stepped slightly in front of me.

Richard noticed.

“You are Nolan Mercer.”

Nolan’s body went still.

“You know him?” I asked.

Richard’s eyes never left Nolan.

“I knew his mother.”

Nolan’s calm expression fractured.

“My mother died when I was six.”

“Yes.”

One word.

Softly delivered.

More threatening than a shout.

Martin’s hand began to shake.

“Finish this,” he said. “The police are already here.”

Richard looked almost bored.

“The police were always going to arrive.”

Ortiz moved one step closer.

Martin pressed the gun harder against Vanessa’s skin.

Sabrina lunged.

The gun fired.

The bullet struck the ceiling.

Nolan drove Martin into the table while Ortiz pulled Vanessa to the floor.

Richard remained seated through the chaos.

I reached for the folders.

He caught my wrist.

His grip was surprisingly strong.

“You want to know who you are?” he whispered.

“I know who I am.”

“No. You know who raised you.”

I tore free.

Sabrina grabbed the folder bearing her name.

Richard slapped her so hard she fell against the chair.

Nolan turned toward him.

Richard lifted a small remote.

“If anyone moves, the archive burns.”

Behind the stage, a red light began blinking.

Fire accelerant.

Paper records.

Medical files.

The original evidence.

Richard looked at me.

“Choose one folder.”

“What?”

“One contains the truth about you. The other contains the truth about Harper.”

“You expect me to choose?”

“I expect you to show me which life matters more.”

I looked at Sabrina on the floor.

At Nolan’s bleeding bandage.

At Vanessa struggling for breath.

At the two folders.

Then I swept both into my arms.

Richard pressed the remote.

Nothing happened.

Sabrina lifted a small battery from her palm.

“I took it while you hit me,” she said.

For the first time, Richard lost control.

He lunged across the table.

Police tackled him before he reached her.

Martin lay handcuffed near the stage.

Vanessa was alive.

Richard was captured.

But Grant was still missing.

And Harper was still under police protection at the hospital.

My phone rang.

The hospital number.

I answered.

A nurse was crying.

“Mrs. Lang, someone entered Harper’s room using your identification.”

📖 Richard was finally in custody, but Grant had reached Harper with an identity card carrying my face and my legal name. 👇
