Chapter 4 - THE FIRST RECORDING

The person behind the pantry wall wore a black hood and gloves.
Officer Brooks picked up Daniel’s phone.
“Who is that?”
Daniel’s face had turned gray.
“I don’t know.”
The figure disappeared from the feed.
The image shook once, then went dark.
Brooks ordered officers to the house immediately.
Daniel tried to explain that Hector had shared access to the security system with him.
Hector denied it.
Eleanor said Daniel was confused.
For the first time, their stories did not align.
That frightened them more than the police.
Valeria was taken into surgery at 5:42 a.m.
I watched the doors close behind her.
Her fingers remained wrapped around mine until the last possible second.
“Mom,” she whispered, “don’t believe the room.”
“What room?”
“The one behind the pantry.”
Then the doors shut.
I stood alone under the fluorescent lights, staring at my empty hand.
Dr. Cole promised to update me.
Officer Brooks asked whether I wanted to accompany her to the house.
I wanted to stay with Valeria.
I also knew the answer to what had happened might be inside our walls.
“Send photographs,” I said. “And don’t let Hector near the property.”
Brooks nodded.
Hector laughed from across the hallway.
“You think there’s some secret chamber in our kitchen?”
I looked at him.
“Valeria does.”
“She’s drugged.”
“She told me before surgery.”
His eyes flickered.
That was all I needed.
He knew about the room.
Officer Brooks saw it too.
She stepped closer.
“What is behind the pantry, Mr. Vega?”
“Pipes.”
“Then you won’t mind us checking.”
“I mind strangers destroying my home.”
“Your daughter was nearly killed inside it.”
Hector’s mouth tightened.
“She injured herself.”
I opened the video message again.
The footage showed him dragging Valeria by one arm.
The camera angle did not reveal what happened before or after.
But in the final second, Valeria reached toward the pantry.
Hector noticed.
He looked directly at the camera.
Then the recording ended.
Someone had clipped it intentionally.
I forwarded the video to Officer Brooks.
She sent it to evidence storage.
Eleanor watched me.
“You have no idea what you’ve started.”
“I’m starting to.”
She smiled without warmth.
“Your daughter has always had problems.”
“What kind of problems?”
“Attention-seeking. Lying. Obsession.”
“She learned about lying from this family.”
Daniel lowered his eyes.
Eleanor’s cheeks tightened.
“You should be careful, Marisol.”
“Is that a threat?”
“It’s advice.”
My phone vibrated.
A new file appeared.
It was an audio recording.
The date was six months earlier.
I pressed play.
Valeria’s voice whispered through the speaker.
“If you find this, Mom, I’m sorry I didn’t tell you sooner.”
My lungs stopped working.
There was a scraping sound.
Then Hector’s voice.
“You were in the pantry again.”
“I was getting cereal.”
“You opened the back panel.”
“No.”
“Don’t lie to me.”
A slap cracked through the recording.
I covered my mouth.
Eleanor looked away.
Daniel’s hands began to shake.
The audio continued.
Hector spoke more quietly.
“That room protects this family. You understand?”
“What’s in it?”
“Nothing you’ll live long enough to use.”
The recording ended.
Officer Brooks forwarded it to herself.
“Where did this come from?”
“I don’t know.”
“Someone has access to your daughter’s files.”
A nurse approached.
“Mrs. Vega?”
I stood too quickly.
“Is she okay?”
“The surgery is progressing, but the doctor found something unexpected.”
“What?”
The nurse glanced toward Hector.
“We need to speak privately.”
She led me into a small consultation room and closed the door.
Dr. Cole appeared on a wall-mounted video screen from the operating suite.
His mask was lowered beneath his chin.
“There are older injuries around Valeria’s ribs,” he said. “At least two healed fractures.”
My vision blurred.
“How old?”
“One may be over a year old.”
I remembered the night Hector said Valeria fell from her bicycle.
She had begged me not to call a doctor.
I thought she feared needles.
She had feared her father.
Dr. Cole continued.
“We also found a trace substance in her blood.”
“What substance?”
“A sedative. Not one administered by this hospital.”
My skin went cold.
“Hector gives her vitamins every night.”
“What kind?”
“I don’t know. He keeps them locked in his office.”
Officer Brooks called while Dr. Cole was still speaking.
Her voice was breathless.
“Marisol, we opened the wall.”
I gripped the phone.
“What did you find?”
“A hidden room containing cameras, medical supplies, and files with your daughter’s name.”
May you like
She paused.
“There are files with your name too.”
