Chapter 8 - THE ERASED HOUSE

Officer Brooks dispatched patrol cars immediately.
The SUV vanished before they reached the intersection.
Traffic cameras captured only a partial plate.
The vehicle belonged to a private security company used by Eleanor’s foundation.
Eleanor denied authorizing it.
Hector denied knowing Camille was alive.
Both requested emergency bail hearings.
While police searched for the SUV, I gave Marcus permission to release Samuel’s statement to prosecutors.
That was my first public move against the Vega family.
By evening, every local news station carried Hector’s photograph.
The story shifted from a domestic incident to a possible family conspiracy.
Eleanor appeared outside the courthouse wearing pearls and a calm expression.
“My family is being targeted by an unstable woman exploiting her daughter’s medical crisis.”
She never used my name.
She called me unstable because Hector had spent years creating records to support that word.
Hospitalizations.
Missed appointments.
Confused conversations.
Prescriptions I never requested.
Marcus warned me that Eleanor’s lawyers would use everything.
“They’ll say you coached Valeria.”
“Then we prove I didn’t.”
“They’ll say you created the anonymous messages.”
“I didn’t.”
“They’ll say the hidden room was for home security.”
“It contained blood samples.”
“They will make every fact sound harmless by separating it from the others.”
I looked through the glass wall at Valeria sleeping.
“Then we keep the facts together.”
Officer Brooks called from our house.
Her voice was tight.
“Someone broke through the police seal.”
My stomach dropped.
“What’s missing?”
“The computers from the hidden room. The freezer samples. Most of the files.”
“How?”
“The rear power line was cut. The backup cameras were disabled.”
“Was there an officer outside?”
“He was found unconscious in his vehicle.”
Hector was still in custody.
Eleanor had been at the courthouse.
Daniel was being questioned.
Someone else worked for them.
Brooks continued.
“The kitchen camera was smashed.”
All our strongest evidence was disappearing.
“What remains?”
“Whatever was already transferred to digital storage. The video you received. The audio. Photographs from the initial search.”
“Is that enough?”
“For assault, maybe. For a larger conspiracy, we need more.”
Marcus asked about Samuel’s statement.
Brooks said a defense attorney would call it an uncorroborated confession from a dead man.
We needed Camille alive.
We needed the medical records.
We needed Hector’s original files.
Valeria woke near midnight.
When I told her the hidden room had been cleared, she did not look surprised.
“He has another place.”
“Where?”
“I don’t know. But the camera system had two networks.”
“How do you know?”
“I saw two sets of addresses on the monitor.”
She reached weakly toward the bedside drawer.
“My bracelet.”
Her IV bracelet was still on her wrist.
“The other one,” she said.
I found a thin woven bracelet inside her bag.
She had worn it almost every day for months.
“It has a memory card.”
I stared at her.
“You copied the files?”
“Some.”
My brave, frightened daughter had been building a case while I was still explaining away the bruises.
She showed me how to open the clasp.
The memory card was smaller than my fingernail.
Marcus inserted it into his secured laptop.
Folders appeared.
Videos.
Dosage logs.
Insurance documents.
A map.
Then the screen flashed.
FILES CORRUPTED.
Valeria’s face crumpled.
“No.”
Marcus tried another program.
The files began deleting themselves.
“Disconnect it!” I cried.
He pulled the card out.
Too late.
The folders vanished.
A remote command had erased everything.
Valeria turned away, tears sliding into her hair.
“I’m sorry.”
I held her face carefully.
“You saved enough to prove you tried.”
“But it’s gone.”
“Not all of it.”
A single printed page had appeared before deletion.
Marcus had photographed the screen.
It showed a property map with coordinates outside the city.
The land was registered to a medical research charity controlled by Eleanor.
At the bottom of the page was a list of initials.
C.R.
M.V.
V.V.
My initials.
Valeria’s initials.
Camille Rhodes.
Beside each was a date.
Camille’s date was seven years earlier.
Mine was three years earlier.
Valeria’s date was tomorrow.

Under the dates were two words.
