Chapter 10 - Victoria’s Black Handbag

Victoria’s structured black handbag appeared in every photograph from the boutique.
Investigators seized it when she was arrested.
Inside they found cosmetics, keys, two phones, and a tiny encrypted storage device sewn into the lining.
Victoria said she knew nothing about it.
That was another lie.
The drive contained records she kept as insurance against Arthur.
Emails.
Voice notes.
Copies of forged documents.
Photographs of cash transfers.
She had documented everything.
In one recording, Arthur told her:
“Once Claire is declared unstable, Mercer moves the assets.”
Victoria asked:
“And my share?”
“Twenty percent.”
“I want thirty.”
“She brought the money into this family.”
“And I taught you how to take control of it.”
Their relationship was not maternal devotion.
It was a partnership.
Another recording captured Victoria mocking Sophie.
“If Claire loses custody, the child becomes leverage.”
Arthur replied:
“I’m not taking care of a toddler full time.”
“Then hire someone.”
Hearing them discuss my daughter as leverage nearly broke the calm I had maintained.
Maya stopped the recording.
“We can finish later.”
“No.”
I needed to hear it all.
The final file had been recorded after the divorce papers were served.
Victoria said:
“Claire will fight.”
Arthur answered:
“She still loves me. That makes her predictable.”
For days, those words followed me.
Not because he was right.
Because he had once been.
I stayed longer than I should have because I loved him.
I explained away cruelty.
I financed second chances.
I protected his reputation.
Arthur mistook compassion for permanent vulnerability.
He did not understand that love can end in one clear moment.
Mine ended when I learned he had planned to use Sophie.
Victoria’s evidence strengthened the criminal case.
But her attorney argued she had preserved the files because she feared Arthur.
The prosecution asked why she continued participating.
She claimed emotional abuse.
Margaret responded publicly.
“Victoria has been frightening people since Arthur was a child. She was not controlled by him. She trained him.”

The two women had been sisters-in-law for fifty years.
Margaret knew exactly who Victoria was.
