Chapter 11 - Claire’s Deal with Victor

Claire disappeared from the hospital parking garage.

Security cameras showed her entering a black sedan with Victor’s associate.

She had been working with him before the quarry.

The kidnapping story was partly true.

Harold threatened her.

But Claire had also negotiated her own deal.

She would give Victor access to trust funds.

Victor would remove Harold and leave her in control of the company.

Her arrogance had convinced her she could outsmart both men.

Nathan froze most of the transfer, but five million dollars cleared before the order reached the offshore bank.

Claire contacted me from a burner phone.

“Do not involve the police.”

“You stole from Grandmother’s trust.”

“It was supposed to be mine.”

“You watched Dad beat me because you wanted property.”

“He promised I would run the company.”

“He promises everyone what they want before destroying them.”

Claire’s breathing sounded uneven.

Victor was nearby.

“He has Mom’s old letters,” she said. “The ones Thomas sent.”

“Why does he want them?”

“They contain coordinates.”

Thomas had used coded locations in the letters to identify safe houses and classified storage points.

Victor believed one site held intelligence files.

Thomas said the coordinates led somewhere else.

A hidden military emergency cache beneath Hart land.

Grandmother had allowed the Navy to use part of the property decades earlier.

The cache had been decommissioned but never fully emptied.

It contained communications equipment, sealed government files, and possibly evidence from Thomas’s old operations.

Victor planned to sell anything valuable.

Claire gave us a location near the northern edge of the estate.

Then she whispered:

“He says he will kill me when the door opens.”

The call ended.

Federal agents surrounded the old bunker entrance.

Victor forced Claire to use the brass key from Grandmother’s envelope.

But the key did not fit.

It opened a smaller panel nearby.

Inside was a military medal display and a handwritten note.

Eleanor had anticipated Victor too.

The note read:

For the man who mistakes classified material for treasure, the truth is beneath his feet.

The bunker floor contained a concealed vault.

Victor forced Thomas to give the code.

Thomas refused.

Victor struck Claire and raised his weapon toward her.

I stepped from cover.

“Let her go.”

He smiled.

“The captain comes to rescue the sister who watched her bleed.”

“I am not here because she deserves it.”

“Then why?”

“Because you do not decide who gets to live.”

Agents moved into position.

Victor pulled Claire against him.

Then Claire drove Grandmother’s brass key into his hand.

He fired.

The bullet struck the bunker controls.

Steel doors began closing.

Victor, Claire, Thomas, and I were trapped inside.

And an old emergency system announced that the underground chamber would seal for seventy-two hours.
