Chapter 8 - The Name Missing from My Birth Certificate

My birth certificate listed Harold as my father.

The signature was his.

The hospital seal was valid.

But Grandmother’s recordings told another story.

Before marrying Harold, Margaret had been engaged to a naval aviator named Thomas Reed.

He disappeared during a training flight thirty-nine years earlier.

His aircraft went down over the Atlantic.

No body was recovered.

Margaret married Harold six weeks later.

I was born seven months after that.

Harold knew I was not his biological daughter.

He raised me because Grandmother threatened to disinherit him if he abandoned Margaret.

That explained the resentment.

But not Grandmother’s devotion.

She knew I was not biologically related to her.

She chose me anyway.

Claire looked stunned.

“You are not a Hart.”

Nathan corrected her.

“Eleanor Hart legally adopted Evelyn as an adult six years ago through a sealed family proceeding.”

I stared at him.

“She what?”

“She wanted there to be no ambiguity. You are her daughter under state law and sole successor under the service trust.”

Harold laughed from the interview room when he heard.

“My mother replaced me with another man’s child.”

“No,” I said. “She replaced you with someone she trusted.”

The military medal chip contained one more file.

A recent recording dated two months before Grandmother’s death.

She sat in this same living room with a frail man whose face I did not recognize.

He introduced himself as Commander Thomas Reed.

My biological father was alive.

His training crash had been staged.

He had entered classified intelligence service and spent decades under protected identity.

Grandmother found him after hiring a military investigator.

Thomas wanted to contact me.

Harold discovered the meeting.

In the recording, he threatened both of them.

“You come near Evelyn, and I expose every classified mission you ever touched.”

Thomas answered calmly.

“I am not afraid of you.”

Harold said:

“You should be afraid for her.”

Grandmother hid the recording before her death.

Nathan traced Thomas through federal contacts.

His current location was restricted.

But someone had accessed his protected identity file three days earlier.

Victor Dane.

Victor had escaped the quarry during the chaos.

He was now hunting my biological father.

The phone in the evidence room rang.

A deputy answered.

Then looked at me.

The caller asked for Captain Evelyn Hart.

I took the phone.

A man’s voice said:

“Evelyn, this is Thomas Reed.”

I could not speak.

He continued.

“Victor found me. Do not come alone.”

May you like

A gunshot sounded.

The line went dead.
