Chapter 5 - The Woman Before Me

Her name was Anna Mercer.

She had been engaged to Daniel six years earlier.

I had never heard of her.

Rachel found her because Daniel once used the same private trust company to hide assets from both of us.

Anna appeared on Rachel’s phone from a quiet room with white walls.

She looked older than thirty-two, not because of her face, but because of the way she held herself.

Carefully.

As if every movement required permission.

Daniel stared at the screen.

“This is absurd.”

Anna heard him.

Her expression changed.

Not fear.

Recognition.

“He still says that,” she whispered.

I stepped closer to Rachel.

“Anna, I’m Emily.”

“I know.”

“How?”

“Because he sent me your engagement announcement.”

Daniel turned sharply.

Vivian looked at him.

“When?”

Anna continued before he could answer.

“Two months after you announced the wedding. He wrote that you were everything I could never be.”

The ballroom reacted with a low murmur.

Daniel’s face remained controlled, but his eyes moved rapidly.

He was searching for a way to discredit her.

“Anna was unstable,” he said.

She gave a sad smile.

“He told you that too?”

I looked at him.

The same phrase.

The same plan.

After the wedding, he had intended to declare me unstable.

Anna explained that Daniel had isolated her from friends and family. He gained access to her accounts. He persuaded her to sign documents she did not understand.

When she resisted, he became violent.

Vivian helped him convince doctors that Anna was suffering from emotional breakdowns.

Arthur prepared temporary financial authorizations.

The pattern was nearly identical.

My father looked at Arthur.

“You worked for them then?”

Arthur nodded.

His face was gray.

“I prepared documents.”

“Did you know she was being abused?”

“I knew she was afraid.”

Anna looked directly at him through the phone.

“You saw the bruises.”

Arthur closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

Daniel stepped toward the phone.

“She is lying.”

Anna flinched.

Even through a screen, his voice affected her.

I moved between him and Rachel.

“You don’t get to speak to her.”

Daniel laughed once.

“You think you’re protecting her?”

“No,” I said. “I’m protecting myself.”

Anna continued.

She had escaped after Daniel left her unconscious in a hotel bathroom during a charity weekend.

A housekeeper found her.

She entered a protected shelter under another name.

Daniel’s family told everyone she had suffered a psychiatric crisis.

Vivian arranged a private settlement requiring silence.

Arthur drafted it.

Anna had kept copies.

Rachel had spent months searching for her after my first call.

My father knew Rachel was helping, but he had not told me Anna had agreed to speak.

He feared Daniel would discover the contact.

Now Anna held up a document.

It was the original settlement.

At the bottom was Vivian’s signature.

Above it was a clause requiring Anna to surrender all claims to assets Daniel had taken from her.

Vivian looked around the ballroom.

The contempt was gone.

She looked trapped.

“You accepted money,” she said.

Anna’s voice remained quiet.

“I accepted safety.”

Daniel turned toward his mother.

“You told me she destroyed those papers.”

Vivian stared at him.

“You told me she would never speak.”

Their alliance cracked further.

My father leaned toward Lauren.

“Add Anna’s records to the file.”

Daniel heard him.

“What file?”

No one answered.

His panic was becoming visible now.

Not because of the wedding.

Because he realized the evidence existed beyond the ballroom.

The sealed folder was not the case.

It was only the introduction.

Anna looked at me.

“Emily, he will try to make you feel responsible for what happens next.”

I nodded.

“He already has.”

“He’ll say you destroyed him.”

Daniel’s mouth tightened.

“He’ll say your father manipulated you.”

My father glanced at me.

“He’ll say the bruises were accidents.”

My fingers touched my jaw.

Anna took a slow breath.

“But none of this began when you exposed him. It began when he decided you were property.”

The words settled over me.

For months, I had feared that leaving would destroy Daniel.

Anna reminded me that staying had been destroying me.

Daniel moved suddenly.

He knocked Rachel’s phone from her hand.

It struck the marble and slid beneath a chair.

The guests gasped.

Charles grabbed Daniel’s wrist before he could reach for me.

Daniel struggled once.

My father did not release him.

“Let go,” Daniel hissed.

“You touched my daughter for the last time.”

Arthur stepped backward.

Vivian whispered Daniel’s name.

Rachel recovered the phone.

Anna was still connected.

Then Detective Laura Hayes spoke through the speaker.

“Mr. Cross, do not leave the ballroom.”

Daniel froze.

The detective continued.

“We need to ask you about Anna Mercer, Emily Bennett, and a third woman named Claire Dawson.”

Anna’s face changed.

“I don’t know Claire.”

Neither did I.

But Vivian did.

I saw it immediately.

Her knees almost gave way.

Daniel looked at his mother.

“Who is Claire?”

Vivian gripped the edge of the signing table.

Then she whispered, “The one we couldn’t pay.”

📖 Who was Claire Dawson—and why did Vivian fear her more than Anna or Emily?
